Watch my video, it will give you a visual explanation of all the areas:

Which area should you choose?

Here is a map of all the best areas to stay in Paris that we will cover in the post:

Map of best places to stay in Paris

The city of Paris is divided into 20 different neighborhoods called “arrondissements.” Starting from the city center and going to the margins, the neighborhoods are numbered in a spiral shape. The center of the city is the island where Notre-Dame Cathedral is located, known as “Ile de la Cité” and the 1st arrondissement.

As you might have already guessed, the neighborhoods in the city center have lower numbers (1st to 12th), and from the 12th arrondissement on, you will find the more distant outer districts.

Here is my list of personalized recommendations for the best places to stay in Paris, broken down by your interests and itinerary:

If you are searching for the best arrondissement to stay in Paris, you should know that each neighborhood has its own unique vibe, so I’m going to help you choose your favorite!

1. The Eiffel Tower / 7th arr. – where to stay for First-Timers

The eiffel tower is lit up at night.

If it’s your first time in Paris, the 7th arrondissement is the picture-perfect starting point. Home to the iconic Eiffel Tower, this elegant, residential neighborhood feels like walking through a Parisian postcard – wide boulevards, classic architecture, and glowing street lamps at night.

If you want to wake up to gorgeous views of the Eiffel Tower, then check out this dedicated post on the best hotels with a view of the Eiffel Tower! Many 7th arrondissement Paris hotels have Eiffel Tower views, and these hotels will cost a bit more than the others. But it’s worth it!

Since it’s a residential area, it’s quieter than the rest. But to make up for the tranquil atmosphere, this area has some of the best Instagram locations in Paris, like the Rue St. Dominique (map) overlooking the Eiffel Tower.

You’ll also find Musée d’Orsay here, hosting a gorgeous array of paintings, some of them dating all the way back to the 19th century! Don’t forget to stop by Invalides (map) as well for some Instagrammable views and pay tribute to Napoleon, who was buried here at Hotel des Invalides (map).

NOTE: In the evening, the nightlife is not super busy here. If you are searching for a place that would be convenient to go out in the evening, I recommend taking a look at Le Marais or Saint-Germain instead.

2. Le Louvre / 1st arr. – where to stay for luxury

The pyramid of the louvre is lit up at night.

Parisians call this neighborhood “Le Premier” – “the first” – and for good reason. The 1st arrondissement is the true center of Paris, so if you want to stay right in the heart of the City of Love, this is the place to be.

This neighborhood is one of the oldest parts of Paris and is located on the right bank of the Seine River, including the Ile de la Cité (map).

It is also one of the smallest districts in Paris, but it packs in some of the city’s most iconic landmarks. The world-famous Louvre Museum is located here, just steps away from the beautiful Tuileries Garden (map).

The Louvre is actually the most visited art museum in the world – and for good reason! Fun fact: it would take you over 100 days to see every piece of art inside if you stopped at each one for just 30 seconds!

You’ll also be within walking distance of Notre-Dame Cathedral (map) and the Centre Pompidou (map), both around 10–15 minutes away. And if shopping is on your list, don’t miss Place Vendôme (map), the high-end boutiques along Rue Saint-Honoré (map), and the legendary Galeries Lafayette (map).

While you’re in the area, be sure to visit the stunning Sainte-Chapelle (map). This Gothic-style chapel is famous for its breathtaking stained-glass windows and is easily one of the most beautiful hidden gems in central Paris.

If you are into beautiful bakery products, check out Cédric Grolet Opéra – the pastry there is so incredibly beautiful! It recently became TikTok famous, so if there is a line, just skip it – the croissants are great everywhere in Paris!

With beautifully preserved architecture and cobblestone streets, it offers a perfect blend of old-world Parisian charm and vibrant city life. It is probably my favorite neighborhood in Paris due to its incredible streets and gorgeous buildings that preserve the passing of time! It’s a cultural hotspot too, with the Picasso Museum and the Jewish Quarter’s rich heritage.

For foodies, there’s a feast of traditional bakeries, trendy cafes, and the Marché des Enfants Rouges (map), the oldest covered market in Paris, where you can savor a variety of gourmet treats.

7. Montmartre / 18th arr. – most romantic neighborhood

An orange car drives down a cobblestone street in montmartre paris.

Montmartre (18th arrondissement) is one of the most popular and gorgeous outer districts of Paris, and also the most romantic place with cobblestone streets, quiet alleys, and stupendous views!

It might be a bit further away from the main attraction in the city, but it is so worth it to stay there just for the artistic vibe this area has!

Montmartre is actually a 130m-high hill, dominated by one of the most famous landmarks of Paris – the Sacré-Cœur Cathedral.

Many famous painters such as Pablo Picasso, Renoir, and Edgar Degas, lived and worked in Montmartre at the end of the 19th century.

In fact, I lived in the area (near the Moulin Rouge, click here for tips on how to get in) for a long time and I can recommend it wholeheartedly if you do not mind taking a short metro ride to the Louvre, Notre Dame, and the Eiffel Tower.

NOTE: Montmartre is technically located in the 18th arrondissement, but you can also search for accommodation in the 9th district (encompasses the Paris Opera House, South Pigalle, and the red light district – which is more fun than freaky) as they are within walking distance to each other.

Montparnasse (14th arrondissement) the local area where to stay in Paris

If you want to stay in Paris without breaking the bank, Montparnasse is a great choice. Located on the Left Bank of the Seine, this laid-back neighborhood offers a more local experience, while still being close to major attractions.

Montparnasse is full of cozy cafés, traditional brasseries and creperies (make sure to check out Creperie Bretonne), making it a perfect area to relax and enjoy authentic Parisian life without the heavy crowds. It’s quieter than central tourist zones, but still well connected by metro, so you can explore the rest of the city with ease.

Don’t miss the Montparnasse Tower, the tallest building in the city at 210 meters, where you can visit the observation deck for amazing panoramic views, especially at sunset. The area is also home to the Montparnasse Cemetery (map), where many famous artists and writers are buried.

  • Canal Saint Martin / 10th arr. – the most hipster area of Paris: The 4.5 km Canal Saint Martin connects Canal de L’Ourcq with the river Seine and is the perfect place to take long walks on a sunny afternoon. The 10th arrondissement is a fantastic location and is full of relaxed people with a Bohemian vibe. Think street art-covered walls and picnics by the canal.
