Verona’s old town is the perfect area for you if you’re traveling here for the first time or maybe just for a weekend. It has all the main attractions, and most of them are within walking distance, so you can easily get around.
The most important sight in Città Antica is surely Juliet’s House and its famous balcony!
NOTE: You can only buy tickets online only for Casa di Giulietta and it costs €6.
Although Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet may be fictional, the 2 families did exist, and their rivalry was based on a true story!
Similar to other places in Italy, Verona is filled with historical buildings and sites from Roman times.
Piazza Delle Erbe, Piazza dei Signori, and Arena di Verona (Roman amphitheater) are just some of the fabulous places that you must see when you visit Verona’s Città Antica !

Although there isn’t much left of this historical landmark, you’ll love the epic view over Verona, Italy. If you need a break from the city atmosphere, head to the Giusti Garden and take a relaxing walk in this beautiful place, dating back to the 1400s. Located west of the city center, San Zeno has such a cool, authentic vibe and is home to many markets and souvenir shops!
The area is organized around the Basilica di San Zeno Maggiore, and it features a lot of 16th-century Renaissance architecture.
You should definitely visit the Basilica as it dates back to the 5th century and see the unique San Zeno Altarpiece made by the Renaissance painter Andrea Mantegna, which is so beautiful!
There’s a piazza outside the Basilica, and during the weekend, it’s full of antique shopping spots. Ciao! Yulia!
My daughter and I are travelling to Verona in May of 2025. We will be coming from the Cinque Terre area via train on a Tuesday afternoon ( I am assuming later afternoon) and will have two full days before heading to Venice on Friday for a flight home on Saturday. I am 55 and my daughter is 28. My question is where do we base? This is the end of our 3 week trek and we want to see as much as possible before heading home to the States. We are travelling via train/bus. Can we walk to Borgo Roma from the Historic Centre? Please give us your thoughts. Thank you! Diane Crook [email protected]
Ciao Diane!
I am so excited to hear about your trip to Italy!
So, you could walk from Borgo Roma from the Historic Centre, but it’s quite the walk (around 40 mins). Therefore, I would highly recommend to stay in Porto Nuova. This to me seems like the best area for your trip – it’s closest to the train station, it’s right next to the Historic Center and it’s a much shorter walk away from Borgo Roma if you would like to also check out that area.
Hope this helps you plan your trip much better! Let me know if you need help with anything more.
