1. Piazza del Campo – where to stay in Siena for the first time

an aerial view of a square in a city

Looking for the perfect location to spend your holiday in beautiful Siena?

Then look no further because I’ve just found it for you! The famous Piazza del Campo is the city’s main square, and it’s the best place to stay in town for those coming here for the first time!

Booking your hotel in this UNESCO World Heritage site means you’ll be just a minute’s walk away from all the attractions and from all the local restaurants that serve great food! You’re in Tuscany, so get ready to eat some of the most delicious dishes!

By the way, if you’re visiting the city in February during Carnival or July and August during the Palio di Siena horse race, I recommend booking your hotel super early as lots of tourists come during that time of year.

For those who don’t know, the Palio di Siena is one of the oldest horse races in the world. Every horse represents an area of Siena, and it’s a pretty unique race as there are practically no rules, and the riders don’t use a saddle!

Siena is a paradise for those who love history!

This medieval town in Tuscany is packed with historic buildings, ancient traditions, and an atmosphere that will make you feel as if you’ve landed on the set of a period drama movie!

For those who love history more than anything, I’d recommend finding a hotel in Torre, an area named after Torre del Mangia, a tower built in the 1300s.

Set just a short walk away from Piazza del Campo, the area is also home to lots of cool city attractions like Palazzo Pubblico and Museo Civico, and it also includes the Jewish Quarter.

You’ll also find lots of amazing restaurants here and wine bars where you can enjoy a yummy glass of Tuscan wine (one of my favorites)!

Set within walking distance of the main square, this area is one of the oldest ones in Siena, and it’s also the place where the famous horse race that I mentioned earlier takes place.

Giraffa is perfect for those who want to be just a stone’s throw away from the city center and all the attractions but also far enough from all the crowds.

The area is filled with cute little wine bars where you can enjoy some delicious appetitive alongside a bottle of wine.

It also has some attractions of its own, like the Gothic-era San Francesco Basilica, which features 14th-century frescoes by the Lorenzetti brothers, and the church of Insigne Collegiata di Santa Maria in Provenzano.

a large stone building

One of the best things to do in Tuscany (especially in Florence) is to admire the art!

The whole city of Siena is like a gigantic piece of art! But if you want to get a closer look at some specific works, I’d recommend spending some time in Aquila, an area set right near the main square.

This is where you’ll find the famous Duomo Di Siena (Siena Cathedral), which houses pieces by Donatello, Pisano, and Michelangelo! I’m already impressed!

Plus many other cool attractions like Palazzo del Capitano, Palazzo Piccolomini o delle Papesse, and Opera della Metropolitana Museum.

Oh my! There are so many things to do here! But don’t forget to stop every once in a while and enjoy an espresso or maybe a glass of wine at one of the restaurants and wine bars!
