Where to Stay in Menorca:ย Epic Towns & Top Islandย Hotels

Overlooking Cala Macarella, Menorca, the view captures a wooden railing leading towards the stunning cove with turquoise waters and moored sailboats, encapsulating the island’s allure

Planning your holiday on this Spanish island is no easy thing, so jump on this guide on where to stay in Menorca (Minorca) if you need some help!

Since the island is so varied and offers so many incredible towns and hotels, I did thorough research and included the top 4 regions and the main towns for each going clockwise from Southeast Menorca, around the island.

I carefully compared all the hotel options and made sure to only add the best-reviewed spots, for all budgets, because we all know how important finding the right place to stay is during trips!

In short, Southeast Menorca is the best area to stay in Menorca. This is where you’ll find the capital city and lots of amazing attractions and hotels.

But as I mentioned, the island is very varied. So, I’ve also included more areas and towns for all preferences and budgets in this post to help you choose the best spot for your Spanish holiday.

Just remember to book your hotels here in advance. Although it has many areas, Menorca is a super popular holiday destination, so it’s better to secure your spot early!

NOTE: The English spelling of the island is Minorca. Menorca is the Spanish/ Catalan spelling. Don’t worry! It’s the same place.

Quick Picks for Your Stay

Check out this short list of the main places where to stay in Menorca, which I made especially for those who don’t have the time to read the whole post:

Watch my video, it will give you a visual explanation of all the areas:

Here’s a map that will help you visualize all the best places to stay in Menorca and areas that I will be talking about in this post:

A colorful map highlighting the best areas to stay in Menorca with numbered locations and labels for easy navigation
  1. Southeast Menorca: for first-timers
  2. South Coast: for the beaches
  3. West Menorca: without a car
  4. North Menorca: for tranquility

1. Southeast Menorca – best place for first-timers

Rugged coastal landscape in Southeast Menorca featuring dynamic blue waves crashing against a sharp limestone cliff, embodying the raw beauty of the Balearic Islands

The Southeast side of Menorca is a great place if this is your first time visiting the island!

Although generally more expensive, this region is home to lots of amazing towns, including the capital of the island (but we’ll talk about that soon). The price difference between the high season (mid-July to the beginning of September) and low season (October to April) is pretty big, so if you’re traveling on a budget, rather visit during the off months.

Boasting mostly a flat landscape with deep gorges and even limestone cliffs in some places, this part of Menorca has a few resorts with beach bars but also lots of villas!

NOTE: Don’t get overwhelmed by the amount of towns I included in this post, the island is not so big and the distance between the towns isn’t much! I wanted you to have a wide range of options since there are so many amazing options. But you can easily travel between the regions and towns, and it won’t take you a long time. For example, a journey from the airport, which is set in the South part of the island to Ciutadella, a town set on the North Coast, lasts around 40 min by car!

1.1 Punta Prima

A bustling beach scene in Punta Prima with people swimming in clear turquoise waters, sandy shore lined with colorful beach umbrellas, and a vibrant collection of white-washed buildings in the background

Although overlooked by tourists, Punta Prima is one of the oldest holiday destinations on the island and a favorite of locals! Luckily, it’s close to the airport, around a 20 min drive away, and it’s one of the best places to stay in Menorca for families!

Here, you’ll find a lot of all-inclusive resorts and a nice (although small) beach where the sea is pretty tranquil with shallow water, making it perfect for your kids! If you are coming with your family, then you should take them to the Splash Sur Menorca Waterpark, they’ll love it!

NOTE: All the hotels in Menorca have imposed a tourist tax, which is around €1 to €4 per person per day. It usually depends on the type of hotel that you book, and it has to be paid separately from the total sum that you’ll pay for the hotel.

Located a 10-min drive away from the airport, Mahon (also known as Mao) is the capital and cultural center of the island! This is where you’ll find some museums, Baroque churches and historic sites. Plus, this area has lots of amazing restaurants with breathtaking views where you can indulge in some traditional food!

If you want to rent a car, this town is a great base, as you can take day trips to other parts of the island and beaches. Since Mahon is not much of a beach holiday destination, Cala Binidalí is a great spot to start from. But when you’re exploring the town and its markets, you can’t miss Mercat des Peix (map).

You can also take a boat trip from Mahon’s natural harbor to Illa del Rey, a small island that’s home to a Church and an 18th-century military hospital.

Charming white structures with terracotta roofs in Binibeca, Menorca, depicting the unique architectural style of the island, against a clear blue sky

This is a great location for couples, those on a honeymoon or people looking for a romantic destination! Binibeca is set a 20 min drive away from the airport and it looks like the ultimate Balearic retreat: just picture lots of whitewashed houses, narrow streets and gorgeous views!

Binibeca is set atop a cliff offering panoramic ocean views and doesn’t have many resorts, but lots of villas, making it perfect for those who’d prefer a more authentic vibe. Most of the beaches here are rocky, but look amazing! If you want to explore more places nearby, check out the nearby Binisafua (8 min drive away) and Cap d’en Font (set a 10 min drive away).

NOTE: Although there are many villas and houses in Menorca, you won’t find many Airbnb options. That’s because they need a tourism license to do so, otherwise they will get a fine.

I’d definitely recommend Cala En Porter to those who enjoy going off the beaten track and those who want to party! This town is home to the island’s most famous club, Cova d’en Xoroi (map), a unique place housed in a cliff-side cave that overlooks the sea!

NOTE: You’ll see that most places are called “Cala” something. Cala usually refers to a small bay on the coastline of a sea or river.

Peaceful coastal vibes at S’Algar, Menorca, with small boats floating on gentle waters, traditional white houses along the shore, and a touch of Mediterranean flora

Set a 20-min drive away from the airport, this former fishing village is pretty small and although it doesn’t really have a sandy beach, you can still chill on the shores or at the Sea Club (map) beach club that has a pool.

You’ll find a couple of resorts, restaurants and even a diving center (map), perfect for those who want to join some underwater adventures! If you want to explore the nearby areas, head to the Alcaufar area (set around a 20 min walk away), which has a few more beaches and hiking trails.

Known for its soft coast, white sandy beaches with crystal clear water and the beautiful cliffs, the South Coast is definitely a place that you should explore! Here you’ll find the usually touristy resort towns but also some tranquil towns where you can get away from the crowds.

2.1 Son Bou

An aerial view of Son Bou, Menorca, showcasing the expansive sandy beach, the inviting azure waters of the Mediterranean, and the surrounding residential areas

This really tiny village is mostly residential. There are only a couple of resorts here, so it’s great for those who want to get a peek at the local life on the island. Son Bou is just a short drive from the airport (around 20 min) and I think families will really enjoy it here.

Not only does the village have a more tranquil atmosphere but also lots of activities for families like fun water sports (everything from kayaking to scuba diving) and boat tours. It’s also super close to the Zoo (which is an 11 min drive away).

The Son Bou beach area is pretty big and there are some sandy shores and also rocky ones, where you can chill!

Home to lots of all-inclusive resorts and upscale resorts, this town is a 20 min drive away from Son Bou and a 30 min drive from the airport. Santo Tomas is great for those who want to relax on the beach and chill at their hotels.

It’s a more touristy location, so you’ll definitely find more crowds here (lots of young families too). Definitely go out of your hotel area to explore the town! You can enjoy the amazing sea views while hiking around the Saint Thomas Dunes (map) or just chilling on Santo Tomas Beach.

  • Villa Le Blanc, a Gran Meliá Hotel (€€€) – by far, one of the best hotels on the entire island! This resort offers breathtaking sea views, suites with a terrace bathtub, a spa and a lounge bar with live music.

Located a 30 min drive away from Mahon, Cala Galdana is a gorgeous resort town, known to have some of the most beautiful beaches on the island! The town has a low-key vibe and just a couple of restaurants, a few local shops (definitely more than you’ll find in other parts of Menorca) and plenty of activities!

Yep, if you want to go hiking, kayaking, or try mountain biking, this is the place for you! Cala Galdana has an abundance of outdoorsy things to do, plus a bunch of places from where you can admire the stunning sea views like this viewpoint (map). 2.4 Cala En Bosc & Son Xoriguer

A serene cove at Cala en Bosc & Son Xoriguer in Menorca, featuring clear blue waters, moored sailboats, and a rocky coastline leading to a beach with a view of resort architecture

I’ve coupled these 2 towns together since they’re right next to each other and share the same vibe! Also known as Cala’n Bosch, this town is probably one of the biggest resort towns on the island. It’s very touristy and comes with lots of restaurants, and bars where you can grab some drinks. There’s even a Burger King!

This place still has a family-friendly atmosphere and lots of families come here for the hotels and attractions like Aquarock Kartingrock Water Park (map). You can try all different watersports, from sea kayaking to flyboarding and paragliding. Plus, you can also join lots of boat tours.

Son Xoriguer, the town’s smaller twin neighbor, has some hiking trails and also a nice rocky beach where you can enjoy the sun. If there aren’t any spots left in Cala En Bosc, you should definitely check out this area.

3. West Menorca – where to stay in Menorca without a car

The peaceful harbor of Ciutadella de Menorca, showcasing boats moored in calm blue waters, with a view of the charming waterfront promenade and traditional white buildings

This region is a great place to stay in Menorca if you don’t have a car! This is where you’ll find one of the island’s main cities, Ciutadella, which is also its former capital. From there you can take lots of buses to other parts of Menorca.

You’ll also find many gorgeous beaches near Ciutadella as well so if you’re looking for a convenient place, in terms of location, definitely check the towns below.

3.1 Ciutadella de Menorca

The historic plaza in Ciutadella de Menorca, with a tall obelisk monument, lush gardens, and a medieval sandstone building under a bright blue sk

Welcome to the former capital of Menorca, which is still one of the island’s center points! This is a great place to set base if you’re not renting a car, as there are lots of buses which go to other parts of the island and to the beaches, as here there’s only one which is okay but not as unique as the others.

But I’d also recommend Ciutadella for those who do want to rent a car, set base here and then take day trips to the other parts of Menorca! And if you’re feeling adventurous and want to rent a boat, then know that Ciutadella is one of the best places to do that!

Some really amazing ones nearby are Cala Macarella (map), Cala Macarelleta (map), and Cala en Turqueta (map).

I think Ciutadella is great for those who want to dive deeper into Menorca’s culture and past. This town has a historic center where you’ll find lots of attractions like the Ciutadella Cathedral (map), little old squares and lots of cool buildings. There are plenty of restaurants and bars in the Old Town, making it the best place to stay in town for nightlife!

The airport is around a 45 min drive away from Ciutadella, so if you’re not renting a car, maybe get a hotel with an airport shuttle so you won’t have to spend a lot of money on taxis.

Vibrant beach scene at Los Delfines & Cala en Blanes with holiday-goers enjoying the sandy shore, straw umbrellas, and a beach bar nestled against a lush green hillside

This is one of the most touristy places on the island and a super popular spot! I coupled Los Delfines and Cala En Blanes as they’re set right next to each other and have the same sort of vibe and type of accommodations.

Here you’ll find lots of bars, restaurants and just places to have a good time! If you’re coming with your family, then the first stop will probably be the Aqua Center Menorca Waterpark, where you can spend your day cooling off and having fun!

But make sure to stop by the beaches, as they’re so gorgeous! Cala en Brut is a fab one where you can jump off the rocks. Then there’s Cala en Forcat and Platja de Cales Piques, which also look breathtaking!

4. North Menorca – where to stay in Menorca for tranquility

Ancient necropolis at North Menorca, featuring prehistoric cave dwellings carved into limestone rock amidst wild Mediterranean shrubbery under a blue sky

If you love hiking, virgin lands and untouched towns then North Menorca is for you! This region has lots of areas which you can only reach by car, so they’re not so crowded.

The North Coast is much more arid, with harder storms and beaches that have a more reddish color and coarser sand than you’d find in the South part of Menorca.

NOTE: If you have 2 weeks in Menorca, it would be a good idea to spend your time in 2 different places so you can see as much of the island. For example, you can start in Southeast Menorca since the airport is there and get a feel of the more touristy side of the island and then come here to North Menorca which is much more tranquil and not as crowded.

4.1 Cala Morell

Breathtaking view of Cala Morell with white villas perched atop red cliffs overlooking a tranquil cove with crystal-clear waters and moored boats in Menorca

If you prefer secluded places that haven’t been transformed into touristy resort towns, then Cala Morell is for you! Located a 40 min drive away from the airport, this little town is filled with gorgeous coves that hide the best snorkeling spots (one of the main activities here).

There are also lots of hiking spots here and the atmosphere just feels so good, especially if you like being out exploring virgin lands! You’ll mostly find villas to rent out here, so let’s check them out:

NOTE: Luckily for all people who don’t enjoy crowded places, Menorca has a low-key tourism compared to other Spanish Islands like Ibiza and Mallorca, so you should be fine!

Idyllic aerial view of the coastal village of Fornells in Menorca, highlighting the white-washed houses and serene turquoise bay surrounded by greenery

Gotta love these untouched towns that have kept their authenticity, even with all the waves of tourists coming in! Fornells is one of those places and it has the cutest harbor area, packed with whitewashed houses and restaurants where you can eat some of the yummiest seafood!

This area also has plenty of fun activities, including water sports and some cool attractions like Castell de Sant Antoni (map)!

You can take lots of boat trips from this area, and actually, many tourists come on day trips to Fornells, as there are limited hotels in the area (and they get booked up fast)!
