1. Pacific City – best place to stay for first-timers
In a central position on the Oregon Coast, Pacific City is a charming town that offers numerous attractions and plenty of activities to keep you occupied. This is one of the best coastal towns in Oregon and the ultimate place to stay if you’re exploring the coast for the first time!
Pacific City Beach (map) is where you’ll probably spend most of your time – it’s a beautiful sandy beach that provides some of the most stunning ocean views. Even though it might not be ideal for swimming, it’s a great spot for a romantic picnic and family-friendly activities, like beach volleyball and kite-flying!
However, one of the most notable attractions in town is the Cape Kiwanda Sand Dune (map)! This impressive dune towers over the beach, and I highly recommend hiking up to the top and getting an even better view of the ocean. Oh, and going down the dune is super fun, too. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even do a backflip on the sand!
Then, you can go on to explore more of the Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area (map), maybe do some hiking or fishing, or if you’re an experienced surfer, maybe try catching one of those waves!
Since Pacific City is centrally located on the coast, it’s the ideal starting point for visiting other beach towns in Oregon, like Oceanside, situated a little over an hour away by car. You should also visit the Bob Straub State Park (map), which is only a 15-min drive South!
As you can see, I recommend driving a lot. Honestly, that’s the only way to truly experience the Oregon Coast, so if you didn’t drive here in your own vehicle, you’ll need to rent a car. That was you can really see everything this coast has to offer.
Enjoy a coffee on the private balcony of your room that overlooks the Pacific Ocean at this amazing hotel with direct beach access. 2. Cannon Beach – where to stay for beaches
Cannon Beach may have to be my personal favorite place on the Oregon Coast, located 1h 30mins North of Pacific City by car! It has the most scenic views, mesmerizing beaches, and abundant nature! The atmosphere is calm and relaxing, so this is a great choice to escape city life for a bit.
The first place to visit is Cannon Beach (map), and hurry up to see one of the most popular attractions – the Haystack Rock (map). This tall rock emerges from the sea as if placed there by hand, becoming a symbol for Cannon Beach! During low tide, you can walk up to the rock and snap some photos.
If you like to hike, then the first spot I have to recommend is the Silver Point Interpretive Overlook (map). This is a scenic spot that will provide the most stunning view over the beach and the rock.
There are a couple of great spots for hiking near Cannon Beach, such as Ecola State Park (map) and Tolovana Beach State Recreation Site (map)!
Finally, you need to try some of the local, freshly-caught seafood! And there’s no better place for it than Ecola Seafood Restaurant (map) – I recommend trying the fish and chips! There are some other great restaurants in the downtown area of Cannon Beach, but keep in mind that most places get crowded. Cannon Beach is a super popular destination on the coast! and museums where you can learn more about Oregon.

3. Astoria – where to stay on the Oregon Coast for history
Astoria is a town with a rich history and incredible natural beauty, a 2h 20-min drive Northeast of Pacific City. It’s definitely one of the best places to stay along the Oregon Coast if you want to enjoy a more urban, livelier vibe and learn more about the history of the town and the region!
FUN FACT: Astoria is the oldest city in the US, West of the Rocky Mountains, founded back in 1811.
You won’t find any beaches here, but there is a cool harbor leading into the Columbia River that you should check out. While at the port, I suggest going for a ride on the Astoria Riverfront Trolley (map), a historic trolley that will take you on a tour along the waterfront and through the town.
If you’re feeling hungry, you should stop by one of the waterfront restaurants. I’d recommend Bridgewater Bistro (map) for a meal with a view and the Pig ‘N Pancake (map) for a hearty breakfast!
You will also come across a few museums and historical landmarks like the Astoria Column (map) and the Flavel House Museum. Another must-visit is the Oregon Film Museum, where you can see exhibits from the movie Goonies and other popular movies that were filmed in Oregon.
In case you’ve had enough sightseeing and want to spend some time in nature, Fort Stevens State Park (map) is just a 20-min drive away. Not only is this a great spot for nature enthusiasts, but it’s also an important historical spot. Here, you can see the famous Wreck of the Peter Iredale (map), an old shipwreck dating back to 1906 – snap some photos! always visit the seaside, which is only a 30 min drive away!

Planning a family trip on the Oregon Coast? While all the towns on the Oregon Coast feature lots of activities for families, Newport is definitely the top choice! Located a little over an hour’s drive South of Pacific City, this lively town offers plenty of ways to spend your time!
The ultimate attraction in town (and the kids’ favorite!) is the Oregon Coast Aquarium. This large aquarium is home to many different species of marine life and some cool birds like the puffin! I’m sure the whole family will have fun and learn something new!
Situated in Oregon’s Central Coast region, Newport has lots of places that are perfect for outdoor enthusiasts, too, like South Beach State Park (map) and Lost Creek State Recreation Site (map).
If your kids still haven’t seen a real-life lighthouse, Newport presents the ideal opportunity! Here, you can visit both the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse (map) and the Yaquina Head Lighthouse (map), which is still operational!
When you’re looking for family-friendly day trip ideas, I suggest Yachats. This is a small town along the Oregon Coast, just a 35-min drive South of Newport. The reason why I recommend it is Thor’s Well (map), also known as the ‘Drainpipe in the Pacific.’ This is essentially a hole in the rocks that makes it seem like the ocean is draining – it’s cool! Another great spot to visit is the town of Florence, a little hour an hour’s drive South of Newport. On your way to Florence, make sure you stop by the Sea Lion Caves (map), a wildlife preserve where you can spot sea lions!
Enjoy a glass of wine by the outdoor firepit while admiring the ocean views at this fabulous hotel. You may not want to leave the comfortable rooms with a private bathroom and charming decor, but during the day, you can try different activities with the kids, like horse riding, cycling, and windsurfing.

Seaside Beach (map) is the best beach around here, with its long sandy strip and shallow waters – the ideal spot to take off your shoes and walk in the wet sand! Be sure to stay for the sunset – it’s the most magical time of the day!
Besides walking on the beach, you can also stroll along the Seaside Promenade (map) – also known as the Prom – or check out the picturesque Painted Rock Beach (map). Pay a visit to the Seaside Aquarium and meet the seals, or spend a fun evening at As Above So Below (map) and take some inverted photos of you and your partner.
If you want to stay active and do some hiking, venture out to Tillamook Head (map), explore the trails, and enjoy the views. And lastly, if you’re looking for places to enjoy a romantic dinner, Nonni’s Italian Bistro (map) won’t disappoint you!

6. Lincoln City – where to stay on the Oregon Coast for surfing
Located in the central part of the Oregon Coast, Lincoln City is just a 30-min drive South of Pacific City and is one of the best Oregon beach towns for surfing. This is one of the more popular places to stay on the Oregon Coast, so expect plenty of people and a vibrant atmosphere.
People who visit primarily for surfing will be interested in Nelscott Beach (map); it’s a lovely beach with big waves, so I advise surfing only if you have enough experience. The beach is quite large, and there are several access points, but I recommend visiting the beach through Canyon Drive Park (map) at least once – you’ll come upon a really great spot.
You’ll also find a couple of great recreation areas in Lincoln City. The Roads End State Recreation Site (map) features tide pools, some small islands, and a hidden cove. The Devil’s Lake State Recreation Area (map), on the other hand, is a lakeside park that’s great for boating and fishing.
For something more laid-back, I recommend a visit to the Connie Hansen Garden Conservancy (map). The garden is home to a variety of plants and a gift shop where you can get some cool souvenirs.
As far as day trips go, the town of Depoe Bay is just a 20-min drive South of Lincoln City. This is the ultimate spot for whale watching, so if you want to stay for more than a day, I can recommend the Whale Cove Inn – sometimes, you can even see the whales from your room window!

The Oregon Coast can be a pricey destination, but that doesn’t mean you can’t pull off a budget trip. Gold Beach is a quiet town on the South Oregon Coast that’s much more affordable than most other towns along the coast. A 4h 30 mins drive South of Pacific City, this town feels more remote and has a different vibe.
One of the most popular attractions on Gold Beach is the Kissing Rock (map). This famous rock formation attracts many tourists who admire its peculiar shape and, of course, chill nearby on the beach.
Right near this area, you’ll find the Cape Sebastian State Scenic Corridor (map), a state park that’s known for whale watching, so definitely check it out!
There’s not much else to go around here except to explore one of the many eateries in Gold Beach. I’d single out Barnacle Bistro (map) for the seafood and Spinner’s (map) for the steaks!
From Gold Beach, you can take trips to other towns on the South Coast. You can make the 35-min drive South to Brookings, situated right next to the California border. This town provides many opportunities for hiking, and it’s super close to the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor (map), a beautiful forest park.
NOTE: There are no luxury hotels in Gold Beach, which is what makes it such a good choice for budget travelers. If you want to stay in a good upscale hotel, you should base yourself on the North part of the Oregon Coast.

Designed as a resort town with a laid-back atmosphere, Rockaway Beach is an hour’s drive North of Pacific City and offers plenty to see and do, including nature reserves and parks.
Just like all the towns on the Oregon Coast, Rockaway Beach is filled with sandy shores and breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. A day on Diamond Beach (map) will make you feel like a brand new person since there aren’t many people around and you can relax as much as you want!
Pack a picnic and head to Manhattan Beach State Recreation Site (map), or go on a relaxing hike along the Rockaway Big Tree Boardwalk (see trail map).
If you’d like to try something more interesting, make the 25-min drive South to Tillamook and visit the Blue Heron French Cheese Company (map). Here, you can learn more about cheese production and sample some delicious cheeses.

This is so helpful. My family is planning a trip late Summer and we want to see as much of Oregon as possible (7 days in Oregon). My kids are 12 and 17. Is there a sort of central location or city that you recommend we stay in? We are trying to minimize the commute time to all of the places we would like to see in 7 days although we realize we will be driving for several hours to get to some places.

It’s basically in the center of the coast near all the other major places that you will want to visit in Oregon. However, if you are looking for something more central then I would recommend stayin in Bend.
