Getting to know Fiji
Fiji is an island country in Oceania, in the South Pacific Ocean. The Fiji archipelago actually consists of more than 330 islands, although only 110 are inhabited.
The Great Sea Reef is one of Fiji’s most amazing phenomena – this is the 3rd largest continuous barrier reef in the entire world, after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Mesoamerican Reef in Central America.
The reef stretches over 124 miles (200 km) and is known among the locals as Cakaulevu Reef and the ‘Protector of Fiji’ because it shields the shorelines of many islands! The reef is a popular fish habitat, but it also offers the most amazing spots for scuba diving and snorkeling!
Before you move on to the best spots for your Fiji stay, there’s one other thing you should know – Bula! This is a Fijian greeting that means ‘Hello’ and ‘Welcome,’ and it’s likely the first thing you’ll hear on the island! Now, let’s move to our exploration of the islands.
1. Viti Levu – the main Island
Viti Levu is the main (and the largest!) island in Fiji. The island is home to some of the most popular tourist spots in Fiji, including Denarau Island, Nadi, Coral Coast, Pacific Harbour, and Suva, the capital of Fiji. On the main island, you’ll find many of the best hotels in the archipelago, as well as some of the most amazing overwater bungalows in Fiji!
When booking your flights, keep in mind that there are 2 international airports in Viti Levu (Nadi Airport and Suva-Nausori Airport), which are located on opposite sides of the main island, about 4 hours driving away from each other. Make sure you know where you are staying and which airport is the closest to your hotel or resort.
Local residents believe in the legend of a serpent deity residing in the Viti Levu mountains, who controlled day and night by opening and closing its eyes.
Since Viti Levu island is quite large and there are many places you would want to stay, I have broken it down into different areas, each one special in its own way.
1.1 Denarau – where to stay in Fiji for the first time
Located on the western side of Viti Levu, just 3 miles (5 km) away from Nadi sits Denarau Island. Known for the Port Denarau Marina and the luxurious yachts docked there, this island is man-made from reclaimed mangrove swamps.
In recent years, Denarau has developed from not much to see to a top touristy location. Here, you can find deluxe beach resorts that offer a wide range of amenities, a great beach, and a variety of other activities.
If you want to explore outside of your resort, one of your first stops should be Big Bula Waterpark, where you can have amazing tropical-themed water adventures. However, if you want to get out of the water for a bit, the Port Denarau Shopping Centre is a great place to spend the day – you can shop, eat, drink, and maybe even see a live cultural performance!
Golf enthusiasts will be happy to hear that many resorts on this island have golf courses, so you can enjoy a game without venturing far out. Plus, most of the resorts are within walking distance of each other, so you’ll have no trouble finding a golf course even if your resort doesn’t have one!
Even if the beaches on Denarau Island aren’t as spectacular as on the other islands, you’re in luck because the transportation between the islands is excellent! You can catch a ferry from Port Denarau to the nearby Mamanuca Islands or the Yasawa Islands, but it’s also a good idea to rent a car and drive around Viti Levu, exploring the different towns and beaches.
In case you don’t want to be in charge of your own transportation, I would advise booking one of the various adventure excursions departing from Denarau – you can go island hopping or deep sea fishing – whatever strikes your fancy!
This luxury resort boasts as many as 6 restaurants, an 18-hole golf course, and lagoon-style swimming pools. One of these is an adults-only pool, but there’s also a kids’ pool and the Blu Bananas kids club, which offers a variety of activities. At the resort, you’ll also find a fitness center, spa, water sports center, and a couple of shops.
Other accommodation options in Denarau
One of the best hotels in Fiji, it has a restaurant on-site, an outdoor pool, free parking, and Wi-Fi
A great option for families or groups of friends, this 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom apartment has a full kitchen and living area

Things to do in Denarau

- Take a ferry and venture out to Cloud 9 – a floating bar!
- Book a cultural night tour and witness the local culture first-hand
1.2 Nadi – where to stay in Fiji on a budget
Located on the western side of the main island of Viti Levu, you’ll probably fly into Nadi Airport when you come to Fiji. Most people start their Fijian adventure in this friendly city as it’s less than a 15-minute drive from the airport. Nadi has plenty of budget-friendly accommodations, and it’s a great area to stay for a night or two before you head off to island hop.
What I love about this place is that it has both the city and beachy vibes plus this place it’s so culturally diverse. You’ll learn a lot of cool stuff here! The Sri Siva Subramaniya Hindu temple (map) is a big landmark here; almost every tourist has a picture with it, so make sure you get one, too!
Nadi is broken up into two sections. There is the city of Nadi, where the temple is, as well as the majority of the regular shops, markets, and local people. Between here and the airport, you will find Wailoaloa Beach. This is where all the tourists stay, and it’s about a 15-minute bus ride from both the city and the airport in either direction!
The public bus into town here is pretty unique; at one point, the bus drives along the beach itself!
Other spots worth your attention are the Sabeto Hot Spring Mud Pool, where you can have a relaxing mud bath and a massage, and the Garden of the Sleeping Giant, home to more than 2,000 different types of orchids.
And if you feel like doing a little shopping, check out Nadi Market, where you can buy anything from fresh produce to unique souvenirs.
From Nadi, you can get a boat to go to the Yasawa Islands and Mamanucas. Most hotels/hostels offer free transport from the airport to the hotel, and often, they can also organize the boat for you, like calling a cab to your front door!
However, if you wish to explore inland Fiji, I have an excellent suggestion for you! First, you’ll need to go along the coast to the little town of Ba and then continue inland to the Navala Village, Fiji’s last traditional village. Here, you’ll see traditional Fijian bures, i.e., thatched buildings, and witness first-hand how the locals lead a traditional lifestyle.
This spacious and bright apartment features its own private pool, surrounded by a gorgeous garden. Indoor, you’ll find 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a large living/dining area, and a fully functional kitchen. The property is air-conditioned and offers free Wi-Fi as well as free private parking. Plus, it can comfortably accommodate up to 5 people!
Other accommodation options in Nadi
Across the road from Nadi Airport, this hotel features 2 restaurants, a bar, and 2 pools
Guests at this apartment can enjoy the terrace and the year-round outdoor pool, plus access to Wi-Fi and streaming services
5 minutes away from Nadi Airport, this apartment has 2 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, and 2 balconies
Things to do in Nadi
- Visit the Fiji Culture Village
- Go hiking on the Nausori Highlands
- Sunbath on Wailoaloa Beach in Nadi
1.3 Suva – where to stay in Fiji for nightlife
Suva is the capital city of Fiji, situated on the main island of Viti Levu. There are plenty of things that make Suva a desirable destination, but one of the things that stands out the most is the city’s vibrant nightlife.
If you want to have a fun night out in Suva, you’ll be happy to hear that there are plenty of opportunities! Paradiso is one of the most popular bars/restaurants in Suva, where you can get amazing Italian food and relax with a glass of wine. And if you want a typical night out, with drinks and dancing, I recommend DownUnder Pub!
Suva has plenty more to offer than bars and restaurants. The Thurston Gardens are one of the must-visit spots in the city; the botanical gardens house more than 1,000 different palm trees, as well as the Fiji Museum, which boasts various historical artifacts that represent Fijian culture.
Near the museum and the botanical gardens, you’ll also find another spot for some relaxing outdoor time – Albert Park. Here, you can have a picnic on the grass or just walk around the park and soak in the surrounding greenery.
You’ll also come across the State House of the Republic of Fiji (map), the official residence of the Fijian president!
I would also recommend you visit Suva Municipal Market to get a sense of the local culture and way of life. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to try some fresh fruit – pineapple slices are quite popular and always fresh!
If you’re into outdoor activities and hiking, Suva is as good a place as any to embark on an adventure in the Namosi Highland. It’s about a 2-hour drive from Suva to Namosi, and once you’re there, you can try many cool activities like whitewater rafting.
While you’re in the area, you need to make a stop at the village of Nakavika. Here, you’ll be greeted as a friend and welcomed into the home of the chief with a traditional Fijian kava ceremony.
The kava ceremony involves sitting in a circle and drinking the traditional kava drink, which is made by straining the crushed root of the yaqona plant through water.
However, I have to warn you that Suva is not the ideal spot if you want that traditional beach vacation. If you want to have a beach day, you’ll have to go out to Pacific Harbour (about an hour’s drive away) and spend the day at the beach there. Alternatively, you can take a day trip to Dravuni Island and have an unforgettable beach day there!
Overall, the capital city is a great place to spend a few nights before you move on to explore many of the other amazing things Fiji has to offer!
A historic hotel originally built in 1914, featuring 3 bars, 5 restaurants, a fitness center, and a day spa. At this property, guests can enjoy amenities such as air conditioning, free parking, a 24-hour front desk, and tour/ticket assistance. Better yet, the hotel is within walking distance of many Suva attractions.

1.4 Coral Coast & Pacific Harbour – where to stay in Fiji for tranquility
Located on the southern side of the Viti Levu island, between Sigatoka and Suva, just an hour (or two on Island time) away from Nadi, the Coral Coast is the perfect place to stay in Fiji if you want to have a relaxing vacation, do some yoga and swim in the beautiful crystal clear sea.
In order to get here, you’ll have to fly to Nadi International Airport. The atmosphere is very laid-back here, and that’s no surprise! Have you seen how beautiful the Coral Coast is? Palm trees, coral reefs, and amazing sunsets will make you never want to leave.
Although there are plenty of hotels to choose from here, they’re all spread out along the Coral Coast and Pacific Harbour, often with large grounds and private beaches, making this area pretty special.
The Coral Coast is all about enjoying nature with waterfalls, beaches, and time with the kids if you’re traveling with family. Plys, the Coral Coast is home to Fiji’s first National Park, so make sure you stop by the Sigatoka Sand Dunes for a unique experience.
When you’re in Fiji, definitely try and learn a new water sport. Natadola Beach (map) is one of the most famous on the island for its numerous cool underwater activities. There are many great dive sites along the beach, starting from snorkeling and diving to zip-lining and river tubing.
The Pacific Harbour area is much like the Coral Coast – mostly made up of beaches and spots to relax and unwind. However, besides the beach, I have to advise you to visit the Pacific Harbour Arts Village – a cultural and shopping center! You can just walk around and explore, or stop for coffee and maybe buy some cool souvenirs!
But..if you’re in the mood for a little adventure, I have a suggestion for you – diving with sharks! From Pacific Harbour, you can venture out to Beqa Lagoon Resort on Beqa Island and have a thrilling diving experience; you’ll see a variety of different sharks during your dive – and you’ll get super close to them, too!
Dining by the pool with views of the gardens and lagoons? 2. Yasawa Islands – where to stay in Fiji for the best beaches
Pristine beaches, blue water, and sunsets will convince you to stay here forever! Or at least longer than the time you had in mind! The archipelago, made of 20 outer islands, is located northwest of Nadi on Viti Levu, Fiji’s main island. This region is a paradise, especially for nature lovers, water sports enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to experience the Fiji beach life!
If you’re traveling here for the first time then the Yasawa Islands look exactly how you picture Fiji in your mind! Small sandy islands with the most amazing blue water – the perfect place for ultimate relaxation.
There are tons of hop-on-hop-on-hop-off boats that run daily from Nadi through the Mamanuca Islands (which I will talk about later) and up to the Yasawa islands, so it is super easy to go island hopping if you want to explore other beautiful places.
I’m sure you won’t be surprised to hear that many Hollywood movies were filmed in Fiji. The famous Blue Lagoon movie was filmed right on the Yasawa Islands!
You’ll definitely want to spend all day on the beautiful beaches in one of the hammocks with a coconut in your hand, or you can go swimming with the manta rays – a truly unique experience.
This region is not popular for its many shops or banks, that’s why it’s the perfect getaway from all day-to-day activities, you’ll love it so much here that you’ll forget to think about any problems!
Leave that somewhere far away! Just make sure to book these in advance, as the Yasawa Islands are the most popular in the country!
This boutique resort is the only one situated on the secluded island of Yaqeta and consists of 9 beachfront bungalows that are situated along 3 white sandy beaches. Each morning, guests are served a free continental breakfast, and during the day, they can participate in a variety of free activities – kayaking, snorkeling, and fishing.
Other accommodation options in Yasawa Islands
Rooms at this resort have balconies overlooking the surrounding rainforest, and the on-site restaurant serves Fijian, European, and Indian cuisine
This accommodation is only accessible by boat or seaplane, while all the bungalows are set right on the beach

Things to do in Yasawa Islands
- Buy a Bula pass and go on boat trips to explore the outer islands
- See the beautiful coral reef on Drawaqa Island
- Go diving on the Tavewa Island
- Admire the beautiful Sawa-i-Lau Caves (map)
3. Mamanuca Islands – where to stay in Fiji for families
A beautiful group of twenty volcanic islands that are situated off the west coast of Viti Levu, the Mamanucas are one of the best places to stay as they’re really close to Nadi International Airport and offer many family-friendly accommodations.
The Mamanuca Islands are famous for their diverse activities and beautiful beaches. Plus, many tourists who travel on a budget choose to come here as they are very similar to the Yasawa Islands in terms of beach life, but the hotels are significantly more affordable!
If you want to know how to get around the islands, then remember that the Mamanucas are split into two parts. In the northern part, you’ll find a group of flat small islands, and in the southern part, you’ll find the more tropical part of the Mamanucas.
As I already mentioned, the Mamanucas are great spots for a beach vacation, so I wanted to recommend some of the best beaches on these islands. The Malamala Beach Club is a beach club situated on a private island surrounded by turquoise waters, while Beachcomber Island Fiji is home to a resort, but also to some stunning beaches.
FUN FACT: I know you’ve been wondering if the famous movie with Tom Hanks, Castaway, was filmed in Fiji, and the answer is YES! The uninhabited Monuriki island (map) was chosen to shoot this amazing movie, and they also filmed some of the survivor seasons on some of the other Mamanuca Islands – get ready for some epic landscapes!
This tropical paradise is wonderful if you want to try all the cool Fijian activities on your holiday, like hiking, surfing, swimming with sharks, kayaking, scuba diving, and many others. Make sure that you visit the famous dive site, The Big W, where apparently people saw a bronze whale shark!
Ever heard about crab racing? Me neither! Crab racing is when hermit crabs compete to be the first to scuttle across a designated finish line on a beach (and yes, there is betting!).
Also, you can go to Gotham City, but you won’t find Batman. What you will find is a large number of batfish – that’s how the spot got its name. And if you’re looking for another unique experience, I have to recommend my favorite – swimming with dolphins! You can embark on an amazing dolphin safari from Musket Cove Marina on the Malolo Lailai Islands.
Want an entire island all to yourself? The Castaway Island Resort is a private island retreat on the famous Castaway Island offering free water sports, 4 restaurants, and a free kids club. Other free facilities include windsurfing, snorkeling, canoeing, and more! The accommodations on Castaway Island are traditional, Fijian-style bungalows, and some of them are directly on the beach.

4. Vanua Levu – where to stay in Fiji for the local experience
I know it can be hard to believe that this archipelago in the South Pacific has any islands that haven’t been transformed into top tourist locations with many luxury resorts at every corner. I’m sure some of you would love to experience the authentic atmosphere of the islands of Fiji. That is why I recommend staying on Vanua Levu, Fiji’s second-largest island.
Although there aren’t high-class bars and restaurants on every street, you’ll love the atmosphere here. Vanua Levu is known for its sugar and copra plantations, but if you want to explore the island, you’ll find tons of hidden villages, mountain trails, and fantastic waterfalls!
You’re still in Fiji, so expect to see some unique beaches and reefs, but for those of you who prefer rainforests, fear not; you’ll find tons here to visit and admire.
If you’d like to explore some of the island towns, I recommend spending at least an afternoon at Savusavu. It’s quite a small town, but it’s a great spot to get a taste of island life. For the ultimate local experience, visit the Savusavu Market & Handicraft and chat with the locals.
Another Vanua Levu town worth a visit is Labasa, the island’s largest town. This is an inland town situated on the Labasa River, another great spot for a local experience. However, I suggest you make Labasa a starting point for your visit to Naag Mandir (map), a beautiful Hindu temple.
Vanua Levu is perfect if you’re wondering where to stay in Fiji in order to get authentic vibes. Discover the rural side of the spectacular South Pacific islands and enjoy some good old beach time!
And in case you want to switch things up a bit, I’d advise you to take a day trip to Taveuni Island, Fiji’s third largest island. There are plenty of things to do here – you can scuba dive, go hiking along the Lavena Coastal Walk (map), and marvel at the amazing waterfalls along the way.
An all-inclusive boutique resort situated on a private island with amazing beaches, spectacular panoramic views, and huge Banyan trees. BONUS: 4 Best Fiji resorts on the water
When visiting Fiji, you’ll probably want to stay as close to the water as possible – I can’t say I blame you! The waters surrounding Fiji are some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen.
So, I decided to recommend some of the best waterfront resorts on the Fijian islands – you’ll find them listed below, in no particular order:
- Likuliku Lagoon Resort – this adults-only luxury resort is the perfect destination for couples on their honeymoon. The resort has an on-site restaurant, an outdoor pool, a gift shop, a shared lounge, and a terrace where you can unwind and relax.
- Toberua Island Resort – situated on a private island, this resort consists of thatched-roof bungalows that are lined along the water. Each of the bungalows has a private terrace overlooking the ocean and both indoor and outdoor shower facilities.
- Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay – guests at the Marriott Resort Momi Bay can stay in upscale overwater Bure Villas with gorgeous views of the lagoon or the ocean while the little ones enjoy the free kids’ club. You’ll also find a spa, 3 pools, and a couple of romantic sunset bars.
- Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa – like many of the other luxury resorts, the Sofitel is in a great beachfront location with a private pool and a spa. The Waitui Beach Club is for adults only, but there’s also a kids’ club, an 18-hole golf course, and an interactive buffet restaurant.
Transportation between the Fiji islands
Deciding where to stay in Fiji is the main thing you need to decide on when planning your trip. However, there are other things you need to consider, such as transportation. As I already told you, Fiji is an island country that consists of many, many smaller islands.
To get the full Fiji experience, I suggest exploring at least a few of the islands – not just the one where you’re staying. But in order to do that, you need to secure transportation from one island to the next, and that’s why I added this key information here.
The following sections contain important info on how to get around the islands, as well as the approximate cost for each type of transport.
Flights
Flying is the fastest way to get from one Fijian island to the next – it’s also the most expensive! Even though there are only two international airports in Fiji, both on the main island of Viti Levu, there are quite a few domestic airports that operate between the outer islands.
There are over 20 domestic airports on the islands, and most get daily flights from both Nadi International Airport and Nausori International Airport (in Suva). Most international passengers land in Nadi and often continue to the Yasawa Islands.
The flight from Nadi Airport to Yasawa Island Airport takes only 30 minutes – it’s very quick compared to the 6-hour ferry ride. However, this quick trip can be quite expensive, especially in high season; be prepared to spend anywhere between US$250 to US$450, but before you do, check all the flight options on Trip.com.
Ferries
The ferry is the most commonly used transportation method for getting around the islands in Fiji; even though it takes significantly longer than flying, it’s much more budget-friendly.
You can book a ferry online, and you can choose a direct ferry trip or a roundtrip day trip. If you want to try island hopping, you can purchase the Bula Pass, which allows you to explore the Yasawa Islands and the Mamanucas. The pass price at the time of writing was US$240.
However, if you want to book a one-way ferry trip, keep in mind that ticket prices range from US$40 to US$100, depending on your destination. So, if you embark from Port Denarau, one of the most popular Fiji ports, to Tokoriki Island, part of the Mamanucas group, you should expect to pay around US$70.
NOTE: the ferries run on ‘island time,’ meaning they are often late, so don’t be worried if you don’t see the ferry at the terminal when you arrive – it’ll get there sooner rather than later! Just set some time aside for the inevitable delays!
Water Taxis
Water taxis are boat services that transfer passengers from one island to the next, but they only service the main islands, Viti Levu, the Mamanucas, and the Yasawa Islands, so they are not a good option if you want to visit some of the more remote islands.
If you want to order a water taxi, you need to do so through the taxi company; Fiji has only two water taxi companies – SeaFiji and Mamanuca Express. To get a taxi from either one of these companies, you need to book it directly through the website, via email, or by phone. Luckily, both companies operate 24/7, so you can get a taxi at any time of the day or night.
As for prices, they vary depending on the destination and the number of people sharing the taxi. For example, the price for a group of up to 4 people can range from US$280 to US$480, while the prices for a group of 5 to 8 passengers range from US$330 to US$450. The final price will be determined based on the distance between the departure point and the final destination.
You can find plenty of different boats for rent at Port Denarau Marina, so you can pick one that matches your budget and offers the type of boat you want to sail on!
Local Motorboats
Finally, if none of the other transportation options work for you, you can always rent a motorboat and get wherever you want to go. I only advise doing this if you have sailing experience, and even if you do, you should have a skipper (nautical expert) accompany you on the boat.
Most of the boat rental companies that operate in Fiji offer a variety of different vessels, from regular motorboats to upscale yachts. However, if you’re only using the boat to get from one island to another, the motorboat will do just fine.
The prices for a motorboat rental are usually around US$100/hour, but if you want to rent one of the more exclusive vessels, you’ll need to pay US$599/hour. Keep in mind that prices can vary depending on the season, the destination, as well as on how long you are renting the boat you can check the rates here!
