Watch my video, it will give you a visual explanation of all the areas:

Which area should you choose?

The first decision you’ll have to make is if you want to stay in one of the villages on the cliff or if you want to be on the beach.

The hotels and villages are in the western part of the island, located on the cliff area with beautiful views of the Caldera, a large cauldron-like hollow created after a volcano erupts. You should stay here if you want to experience the famous Santorini sunset.

The Caldera is a huge volcanic crater, where an eruption created a basin. It’s a stunning sight!

The beaches are located on the eastern coast, so if you prefer to have direct access to beachy vibes, this is the side for you!

ere is a map of Santorini with the best neighborhoods to stay in:

1. Oia (Caldera) – where to stay for the first time

Flowers near the road in Santorini

Oia is located in the north-western part of the island, and it offers gorgeous views of the sunset, countless activities to do during the day, and a bit more peace and quiet during the evening and night.

There is only one bar in the town, but you’ll have many options for restaurants and shops for all budgets.

For UNBEATABLE restaurant views, I highly recommend Kyprida, which is a hidden gem that not many tourists know about! (map)

You’ll find plenty of gorgeous hotels if you want to stay in Santorini, the best of which I’ve mentioned below! If you need more options, check out our post with the best hotels in Oia, Santorini!

NOTE: many hotels say adults-only, but this doesn’t really mean there won’t be any kids! It usually means that there are lots of stairs to climb and other safety precautions at play that make the hotel only suitable for those ages 12+

Fira is the capital of Santorini, located on the caldera cliff, which can only mean one thing: the views here are simply superb!

Overview on Santorini on a sunset

Honeymooners gather! If you’re looking for the most romantic, secluded and intimate town along the caldera, then I definitely recommend Imerovigli, also known as the “balcony to the Aegean!”

This is also the place that offers THE best sunset views out there that overlook the Aegean Sea, so don’t forget your camera!

Since you can’t find bars or clubs on this part of the island, this makes it the perfect place if you are looking for the most overall calm getaway along the Caldera. You can easily hike up to the Skaros Rock viewpoint from here, and if you’re looking for a romantic evening activity then I highly recommend The Wine Bar! (map)

4. Firostefani (Caldera) – for a calm getaway

Twilight over Santorini's white buildings and blue domes.

Firostefani, probably the most underrated Caldera town in Santorini, is only 15 minutes away from Fira.

This makes it a perfect option if you want to be close to the main hub and all its great connections without the hectic crowds.

As you can expect, this area has amazing views just like the other cliff towns, good restaurants and cafes, but no clubs, pubs, or bars, making it a perfect spot for those travelers that are looking for a serene getaway.

Firostefani is actually considered a part of Fira but is situated above it! Big bonus to staying in a quieter part of Fira? The hotels are cheaper!

The main street here is also a great shopping spot where you’ll find anything you might need!

P.S. if you’re into art, I highly recommend visiting Art of the Loom (map) for a chance to buy locally-made art pieces and sculptures!

Kamari beach in Santorini with black pebbles and seaside resorts

Kamari is one of the most beautiful beaches in Santorini and it’s the perfect choice for families looking for a laid-back atmosphere!

Compared to the towns along the cliff, Kamari is actually more modern.

There are tons of amazing beach restaurants, cafes, and taverns along Kamari Beach, where you can take a stroll on the beachfront and enjoy the beautiful pebble and black sand.

There’s an open-air cinema on Kamari Beach, so don’t miss it even if you’re not staying here! (map)

Kamari Beach is only 15 minutes away from Fira by bus, so no worries about getting to explore both sides of Santorini! Kamari is also the place where Santorini Airport is located, so this is the place where you’ll land if you plan on traveling to the island by plane.

A beach in Santorini with cliffs in the background and lounge chairs

Perissa Beach is located further away from Fira, but the sand (gorgeous black sand) is much better. But no worries, you can always rent a car or even a scooter if you plan to explore the other sides of Santorini!

Are you traveling to Santorini on a tight budget? Perissa is the right place for you, with plenty of affordable accommodations and superb beaches!

Perissa Beach is located further away from Fira, but the sand (gorgeous black sand) is much better. But no worries, you can always rent a car or even a scooter if you plan to explore the other sides of Santorini!

Legend has it that Perissa was built on the ancient city of Elefsina, more commonly known as Eleusis!

Perissa caters to all types of budgets out there, and you can find everything your heart desires, from an upscale private villa to Santorini hostels, from tavernas or beach bars to upscale food places.

Perivolos is located super close to Perissa (3 km or 1.9 mi away) and it can be considered literally an “extension” of it, while also being a great option if you’re looking for beautiful, luxurious beachfront hotels!

As Perivolos is a bit further from Fira, the prices here are so much lower – which is why luxury hotel connoisseurs venture here to save their wallets!

This is also a great spot to try some exciting water sports, from scuba diving to jet skiing! I would highly recommend renting a boat from Extreme Water Sports, right on Perivolos Beach! (map)

Perivolos is full of great beach bars, so it’s a great destination if you’re interested in dancing – check out Chilli Lounge Bar for great food and drinks! (map)
