I visited the city a couple of times and I absolutely love it! I can confidently say that Belváros – Lipótváros (District V) is the best place to stay in Budapest. It’s the ‘downtown’ part of Budapest with plenty to offer to both first-timers and returning visitors.

Should you stay in Buda or Pest?

Deciding whether you want to stay in Buda or Pest is the first thing to do before booking your accommodation. Even though the 2 halves of the city are well-connected, they have quite a different vibe:

• Buda is on the West bank of the Danube River and is more residential than Pest. It’s calmer and fit for laid-back travelers.
• Pest is vibrant and always awake. It’s situated along the East bank of the Danube River and features all the major tourist attractions. 

I personally think Pest is best for most tourists because it’s perfect for sightseeing.

Budapest has 23 districts, so here are my personalized neighborhood recommendations for all types of travelers:

1. Belváros–Lipótváros (District V) – best for first-timers

District V, also known as Belváros – Lipótváros is the best spot if you’re visiting Budapest for the first time or have limited time in the city. Belváros is a district in Pest, and it actually means ‘downtown,’ so it’s close to everything that you’ll want to visit!

Some of the main tourist attractions you’ll find in downtown Budapest include the Hungarian Parliament Building, St. Stephen’s Basilica, the famous Chain Bridge, and the Shoes on the Danube Bank memorial.

If you’re staying in this neighborhood during December, you have to visit the Budapest Advent and Christmas Fair at Vörösmarty Square (see the best Christmas Markets in Europe here). 

Luxury (€170 and up)

Mid-range (€90 – €170)

• TG Hotel Suites – if you want to stay in an aparthotel in Budapest at a great price, this one’s for you! This property has beautiful rooms – spacious and clean – and even an on-site restaurant and bar!
• La Prima Fashion Hotel Budapest – situated on Váci Street, Budapest’s main shopping hub. This hotel offers comfortable, air-conditioned rooms, and guests get free access to Wi-Fi and the opportunity to try Hungarian food at the hotel’s restaurant.

Budget (up to €90)

• Maverick Hostel & Ensuites – located in a turn-of-the-century building, the hostel offers comfortable lodgings in shared dormitories, as well as a shared lounge and a kitchen. There’s also a 24-hour supermarket in the building – quite convenient. 
• Amber Terrace Studios – this 3-star hotel is in a super central location, close to Great Market Hall and the river bank. All rooms feature a kitchenette and flat-screen TVs, and some even have a private balcony.

2. Budavár (District I) – best for a luxury stay

District I is centrally located on the Buda side and is home to some of the city’s most remarkable attractions. I recommend you start at Buda Castle, then move on to the Fisherman’s Bastion and Matthias Church. 

There are plenty of magnificent sights on Castle Hill, but although the walkup is definitely worth it, it can be a little tiresome. If you don’t feel like walking, hop on a river cruise and admire the landmarks from afar while sipping on wine. 

Art lovers will find plenty to visit in the Castle District, and the Hungarian National Gallery is a must! If you’re into unique museums, you’ll surely enjoy the Hospital in the Rock Nuclear Bunker Museum.

Considering all the attractions that are here, you should expect steeper prices at restaurants and accommodations, but it’s well worth what you’ll get. 

Luxury (€170 and up)

• PEST-BUDA Design Hotel – if you love hotels with a unique design, this one’s for you! Originally opened in 1696 and renovated in 2016, the hotel offers bright and comfortable rooms with super-cool decor.
• Hilton Budapest – this 5-star hotel has a stunning design! Located right in the heart of the Castle District, it provides the best city views. Plus, you can work out in the fitness center or relax in the sauna.
• Hotel Clark Budapest – an adults-only hotel close to all the main sights. While staying here, you’ll enjoy a delicious buffet breakfast, but for dinner, I advise you to visit Leo Bistro, the hotel bar, where you can admire some of the best views of the city.

Mid-range (€100 – €170)

• Monastery Boutique Hotel – enjoy a 4-star stay at accessible prices in the Castle District. This boutique hotel is super close to Fisherman’s Bastion, and there’s free Wi-Fi, a delicious buffet breakfast, and many other amenities!
• Hotel Castle Garden – this beautiful boutique-style hotel features cozy and stylish air-conditioned rooms right in the middle of the Castle District. Enjoy the uniquely styled bistro restaurant with a bar and the big garden surrounding the property.

Budget (up to €100)

• Ékszerdoboz A Budai Vár Alatt – an entire apartment for an affordable price, comfortable and relaxing. Guests can use the shared garden and the hotel’s picnic area.
• Christine Apartment – this high-rated accommodation is available at a great price, considering the amazing service and location, above a grill restaurant close to Buda Castle. Plus, the rooms are super cozy!

3. Rózsadomb (District II) – best area for families

If you go a bit North from the Castle District, you’ll arrive in Budapest’s District II – Rózsadomb. 

The area is perfect for a family stroll along the beautiful streets or relaxing at the baths in the area, such as Lukács Thermal Bath and Veli Bej. 

For food, one of the best things you can do is visit the Fény Street Market Hall and try some of the local food.

Margit tér Park is an excellent place to spend a day with a family, but for an even better adventure, take the kids out to the Children’s Railway, where the little ones can assume the role of training guards and ticket masters. 

District II may not be the “epicenter” of tourist spots in Budapest, but it’s close to the center of the city, and you won’t miss out on anything! Plus, there are some great accommodation options.

Luxury (€160 and up)

• The Hotel Unforgettable – the name says it all – this 4-star hotel really is unforgettable and a great choice for families! The rooms are cozy and modern, and there’s a big playground for the little ones and an outdoor swimming pool!
• Danube Terrace Boutique Residence – free Wi-Fi and air conditioning are available in this boutique apartment. Guests can enjoy a sauna and use the various household amenities – perfect for a family stay.

Mid-range (€100 – €160)

• Grand Jules – Boat Hotel – have you ever stayed in a boat hotel? Well, if not, this is your chance! This cool accommodation is located on the Danube river bank and offers amazing views of the Parliament Building.
• Klebelsberg Kastély Budapest – this budget hotel offers amazing facilities and amenities for unmissable prices! Some of the biggest pluses include free Wi-Fi, a 24-hour front desk, a buffet breakfast, and more!

Budget (up to €100)

• Ria’s Apartment – I know you were expecting a hotel, but this is actually an amazing apartment in District II that offers hotel-style facilities! The rooms are cozy, and they even have access to a sauna. Plus, there’s free private parking!
• Gul Baba Saray Apartments – another apartment recommendation worth checking out. The little garden will make you feel like you’re in the countryside, but you can always get a bike from the hotel’s rental service and go on to explore the city.

4. Terézváros (District VI) – best area for budget travelers

District VI, also called Terézváros, is located on the Pest side of Budapest and is an excellent choice for budget travelers. It is 20 min walking to 15 mins by public transportation from the Parliament depending on where you stay exactly. 

Andrássy Avenue is the highlight of Terézváros; this is a 2.3-km (1.4-mile) street that leads up to the famous Heroes Square. The avenue has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site so you should definitely take the time to walk the length of it!

If you’re staying in the area, you have to spend some time at the Szechenyi Baths which is just around the corner from there. Szechenyi is one of the oldest and most famous thermal baths in Budapest with 18 pools, saunas, steam rooms and more! I’ve been there and would ove to come back again!

The Szechenyi Baths host summer night spa parties in almost every month of the year!

History buffs can learn a lot at the House of Terror Museum, but I have to warn you – it’s creepy!

In terms of restaurants, I think The MAGIC Budapest deserves a special shout-out. This Harry Potter-themed restaurant is extremely popular, so be sure to make a reservation!

Luxury (€150 and up)

• Hotel Moments Budapest – a high-end property with tasteful decor that provides 4-star service for all its guests. The best thing is that it’s actually located on the iconic Andrassy Avenue – what more can you wish for?!
• Barceló Budapest – this hotel awaits with an on-site restaurant, a bar, a nice garden, amazing rooms, and concierge service! American breakfast is served every day!

Mid-range (€80 – €150)

• T62 Hotel – if you’re looking for super cool decor, I have an excellent recommendation! This hotel has free Wi-Fi, views of the city, and air-conditioned rooms. Plus, it’s very tasteful and vibrant!
• Carat Boutique Hotel – this boutique hotel stands out with its elegant decor and comfortable furnishings, in addition to free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, satellite TV, and an amazing breakfast.

Budget (up to €80)

• Medos Hotel – this awesome 3-star hotel has a very convenient location and even better prices. It’s close to the Opera House and Saint Stephen’s Basilica; the rooms are clean and nicely decorated.
• Sakuranbo – Guest House – if you prefer a guest house, this awesome property is simple but very cozy. Also, it has everything you might need for a perfect stay, from Wi-Fi to toiletries. 

5. Erzsébetváros (District VII) – best area for nightlife

Erzsébetváros is also known as the historic Jewish District of Budapest. It’s the best spot for tourists interested in the city’s vibrant nightlife and a great location for a stag do! 

The Jewish Quarter is one of the smallest Budapest neighborhoods, but it’s also the most populated part of the city!

The main attraction in the area is the biggest synagogue in Europe and the 2nd biggest in the world – the Dohány Street Synagogue.

The New York Palace is a popular tourist destination, mainly because of the famous New York Café, dubbed ‘the most beautiful café in the world’! You can make dinner reservations, but if you want to stop for coffee during the day, get ready to wait in line!

You’ll find TONS of good bars and local restaurants in the Jewish District, and, of course, the famous ruin bars. Szimpla Kert is the first bar of this kind, so it’s a must-visit. 

Luxury (€150 and up)

• Anantara New York Palace Budapest – an iconic Budapest hotel with impeccable 5-star service and spacious rooms furnished with Italian lux furniture. Plus, it’s home to the renowned New York Café!
• Corinthia Budapest – if you want to stay in a Budapest spa hotel, here’s an excellent choice! This 5-star hotel awaits with a Royal Spa, 3 restaurants, a cozy on-site café, and superb rooms. 

Mid-range (€100 – €150)

• City Home Budapest – this 4-star hotel comes at great prices, considering the world-class service they offer! All apartments are elegantly furnished and equipped with a kitchen. There’s also a daily maid service!
• Ambra Hotel – relax with the sauna and massage services, or head over to the bar for complimentary tea and coffee. Air conditioning and Wi-Fi are included in the price, while parking and a shuttle service are available for an extra charge.

Budget (up to €100)

• Maverick City Lodge – this awesome hostel has very good prices and stunning reviews from guests! The rooms are simple and very clean! The hostel has free Wi-Fi everywhere, bike rentals, and a spacious common room with a kitchen!
• NETIZEN Budapest Centre – yet another conveniently located hostel with shared dormitories and bathrooms, a shared lounge, and a bar. A buffet breakfast is served daily.

6. Józsefváros (District VIII) – coolest part of Budapest

If you’re looking for a cool and artistic district, Józsefváros is the place to be. This district is called ‘Palace District’ due to the large number of palaces in the area, with Gráf Festetics Palace being the most notable one.

To feel the true artistic spirit of the place, pay a visit to the first Hungarian artists’ colony on Százados Road, where many famous artists once lived and worked. 

Highlights of the neighborhood include the Hungarian National Museum and Natural History Museum. For shopping, head to the Corvin Plaza Shopping Mall (map) or explore one of the many shops and boutiques lining the streets. 

I advise you to stay as close to the center of the neighborhood as possible, as that’s the best tourist area.

Luxury (€150 and up)

• Kozmo Hotel Suites & Spa – a 5-star hotel within walking distance of the main attractions in the neighborhood. Guests can play billiards, utilize the fitness center, and enjoy a gluten-free breakfast.
• The Amberlyn Suite Hotel – the hotel has a 24-hour front desk, concierge services, and a paid airport shuttle. The rooms are spacious, with a dining area, kitchenette, and a seating area.

Mid-range (€80 – €150)

• Bo18 Hotel Superior – this hotel is the best option if you want to relax after visiting the city. In fact, this accommodation offers Finnish and infrared sauna, hot tub, and fitness facilities at accessible prices!
• Hotel Palazzo Zichy Budapest – free use of the sauna and fitness center? Yes, please! This beautiful 4-star hotel has everything you might want for a great stay in Budapest, from amazing rooms to free Wi-Fi and a rooftop terrace!

Budget (up to €80)

• Central Hotel 21 – this hotel offers great rooms and apartments and a 3-star service for great prices. It’s located right in the heart of the district, and the staff is friendly and helpful. 
• Corvin Plaza Apartments & Suites – modern and stylish apartments featuring a kitchen, dining area, and a private bathroom with free toiletries.

7. Ferencváros (District IX) – best area for foodies

Ferencváros, the 9th district of Budapest, is a diverse and versatile area in the South of Budapest. 

You have to check out the Central Market Hall, where you can find anything you want, from traditional food stalls serving lángos and goulash to vendors selling fresh produce and spices. And of course, you can get plenty of souvenirs!

It’s home to the National Theater and the Palace of Arts (Müpa Budapest), making it a cultural hotspot. Other notable mentions are Zwack Unicum Museum and Ludwig Museum. 

The area also features the bustling Ráday Street, lined with restaurants and cafes, and is known for its green spaces like Nehru Park.

The food options in Ferencváros stretch much farther than the Market Hall; the Ukrainian Courtyard serves top-notch Ukrainian dishes, Hoppácska has some of the best sandwiches in the city, and Palacsinta Palota is renowned for its pancakes!

Luxury (€150 and up)

• TK Homes – the perfect mix of luxury and comfort! There are different apartment types, depending on the size of your group. There’s also free Wi-Fi, a fully equipped kitchen, and private parking!
• MT Suites Budapest – a luxury apartment with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, on-site parking, and a garden. The apartments are spacious and have a fully equipped kitchen. Better yet, the property has a car rental service, so you can easily organize a day trip.

Mid-range (€80 – €150)

• Corvin Hotel Corvin Wing – an excellent 4-star hotel! Some of the rooms have a balcony with nice views, and there are even triple rooms or suites you can choose from! Plus, the location is great for riverside walks.
• The Three Corners Lifestyle Hotel – a 4-star accommodation close to the Great Market Hall. Some of the standout features are the beautiful terrace and the sauna – both perfect for relaxing. And the rooms, especially the decor, are simply superb!

Budget (up to €80)

• MEININGER Budapest Great Market Hall – if you’ve always wanted to stay in a hotel with floor-to-ceiling windows, this one’s for you! The staff is helpful, and the hotel gets bonus points for welcoming pets!
• Flow Spaces – a bright, colorful hostel with a shared terrace and lounge. The rooms are clean and neat, air-conditioned, and with access to free Wi-Fi. 

8. Angyalföld (District XIII) – for the best green spaces

Although located on the Pest side of the city, Angyalföld is a quiet neighborhood, great for laid-back travelers looking for green spaces. 

The Budapest Zoo & Botanical Garden is the best place to start exploring the area, and you’ll also find tons of great restaurants, cafés, and charming bookshops in Angyalföld. 

TIP: if you’re in Budapest during the Sziget Festival, which takes place in August on Óbuda Island, Angyalföld is your best bet for accommodation – the rest of the city will be hectic!

I also recommend visiting Margaret Island (Margit Sziget), a gorgeous island park perfect for a relaxing day outdoors.

NOTE: if you decide to make District XIII your base, please know that you won’t be within walking distance of the city center, so you’ll have to rely on public transport (~30 min to the center), tram and bus being one of your best bets.

Luxury (€140 and up)

Luxury (€200 and up)

Mid-range (€70 – €200)

BONUS: Best hotels near Budapest Airport

In case you have a late-night flight or leave super early in the morning, staying as close as possible to Budapest Airport (BUD) might be the smartest choice, so here are my hotel recommendations. 

• Airport Hotel – a hotel offering 4-star service and a minibus that can take you to the airport! There’s also a sauna, a restaurant, and on-site shopping spots. A car rental service is also provided by the hotel. 
• Airport Almáskert Panzió – a simple yet super cozy bed and breakfast with a shared lounge and a garden. There’s also free parking and Wi-Fi. 
• Airport Apartman – an apartment for budget travelers, super close to the airport. Clean, cozy, spacious, with a balcony, sauna, and free parking.
