Ribeira is definitely the top area for first-timers and history lovers. Its central location makes it the perfect place for exploring Porto!
This district is historical and picturesque with its colorful houses, mostly flat and narrow medieval streets, stunning historic buildings and landmarks, and scenic views of the Douro River you can catch at Cais de Ribeira.
Some sights you cannot miss during your stay are the exposed stone walls of Porto Cathedral (map). You can also walk the 14th-century Fernandina Walls of Porto – from here, the views of the Luis I Bridge and Douro River are iconic!
Ribeira Square was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, so it’s a must on your visit to the city!
Bolsa Palace is a must-see!!! It was built in the 19th century and has marvelous architecture. Afterward, relax and get lost around the beautiful narrow streets of Porto and enjoy a coffee on a terrace like a local would!
If you wish, you can also go uphill to a fantastic viewpoint from Elevador de Lada in Ribeira. It just takes a couple of minutes, and you’ll be whizzed up the hill for gorgeous vistas of Porto for free!

If you are looking for central neighborhoods, it doesn’t get more central than Baixa and its neighboring area, Sé! It is the heart and pulse of the city!
Centro Baixa and Sé have so much more to offer! First, it is home to landmarks, such as Porto Town Hall. The building dates from the 1900s, and you can visit it for free!!
Check out the Church of Saint Ildefonso (map), a unique 18th-century church with blue and white tiles located in Batalha Square. PRO TIP: Take the Funicular dos Guindais from Batalha Station to Ribeira waterfront; make sure you can pay the €3,5 ride fee in cash!
Porto had a different name during the Roman times! Back then, the city was known as Portus Cale.
Rua Santa Catarina, located in the Bolhão zone in Baixa, is the place to go if you want to shop for famous brands and cute boutiques. It’s also a great place to treat yourself to a traditional Francesinha, Brasão Coliseu has the best ones in town!
By the way, this area nestles the beautiful São Bento Station (map) – a train station that looks like an art museum! Even if you have no trains to catch, just come inside, it is so pretty!
A great factor about staying in this district is that you’ve got easy access to the rest of the cool areas in the city. You’ll have Ribeira and its waterfront and Cedofeita within a 10-minute walk!After you shop ‘til you drop, you can head over to one of the many Portuguese-style pubs in the area, have a local beer, and enjoy the vibes! 3. Bonfim – where to stay for a local atmosphere
Bonfim is usually an area that gets overlooked since it doesn’t nestle the most famous tourist attractions. But honestly, it is a gem of an area. Here, you can experience authentic local life and this is where I stayed as well!
The neighborhood is east from Baixa and extends to the waterfront. It is only a 10-minute car drive away from the city center and a 20-minute ride by public transport. This is such a deal knowing that accommodation here is usually cheaper since it is not touristy!
Just like the rest of Porto, Bonfim is also home to a beautiful Cathedral. The Church of The Lord of Bonfim (map) features a unique neoclassical style. Believe me when I tell you it will CHARM you!
One of the musts in the area is the Miradouro das Fontainhas (map). The views from this lookout are super romantic! Once you are in the area, don’t miss Lavadouro das Fontaínhas, a historical site with cultural significance where locals used to wash their clothes in the 1900s!
Bonfim has a special vibe, without a doubt. You can find locals that lived there their entire lives and new artsy residents who move in while Bonfim slowly gets gentrified. And that explains the amount of cool, especially cafés and breweries in the area.
I suggest you stop by Dona Mira, you will feel like you are in someone’s cozy and arty living room filled with books you can borrow. The grilled cheese croissant is a hit!

If you are looking to stay in Porto’s art district, then you need to stay in Cedofeita!
The area is super central, only a 10 minute walk to central areas like Ribeira and Baixa and its main attractions. It has a unique local and artsy feel, and it’s the main nightlife hub!
The area is filled with hip cafés and cool art galleries where you can purchase pieces from emerging artists! Rua de Miguel Bombarda is the main hub to find all these cute spots, I suggest you stop by Ó! Gallery and buy unique illustrations on that street!
Did you know you can climb the iconic Torre Dos Clérigos, which are part of Church Dos Clérigos? The views from there are unique, and you can even opt for a night visit! The beautiful area of Miragaia is only a 5 minute walk from here, and absolutely worth a visit to see its traditional houses!
If you love old bookstores then Livraria Lello is the place for you! It features a beautiful wooden structure and staircase and a unique vitraux ceiling from 1906 that, rumor has it, inspired J.K. Rowling’s Hogwarts school in Harry Potter!
The ticket is 8EUR and you have to buy it beforehand online with a timeslot reserved (trust me it is better this way, before they used to have horrible lines to enter and the payment was in a separate place to add to the confusion).
In Cedofeita, you can find everything from famous sights to amazing restaurants and boutique stores. It’s definitely a great place for those looking to discover the city’s nightlife.
Some of the district’s best nightlife can be found in the streets of Galeria de Paris, and Rua do Almada. I suggest you go to the trendy Fabrik Bar for an epic night out!
If you are into art and want to stay in the ultimate art district, Cedofeita is what you are looking for, and you will also be within walking distance of downtown Porto!

5. Vila Nova de Gaia – the best area for wine and beach lovers
Vila Nova de Gaia is its own world! It is located across the Douro River, part of Porto Municipality, but it’s its own city!
This city is known to be where Porto wine was created and the home of hundreds of Port cellars you can visit during your stay. One of the best is Cockburn’s, where you can take a tour and learn all about the creation of Port!
But there is more than wine in the area. In Vila Nova de Gaia, you can find the most delicious restaurants and beautiful beaches, besides some landmarks!
One of the most iconic beaches in the area is Praia da Madalena (map). Sunbathe and go for a swim, or enjoy a summery drink at its many beachfront bars!
Did you know port wine was actually invented by the English? They added brandy to the original wine so that it could survive the trip on a boat from Douro to England!
If you want to visit historical landmarks, you can visit Monasterio da Serra do Pilar. For the rest of them, you’ll have to cross the Luis I bridge to Porto. But while you are there, check out the Serra do Pilar viewpoint too (map)!
You should definitely go to Jardim do Morro for a picnic, this park is quite inclined so you will have unspoiled views of the city and river! Afterward, you could hop in the Teléferico de Gaia, a cable car that takes you from Jardim do Morro Station to Cais the Gaia Station (6€ single/9€ round trip)!
For a traditional meal in a cozy ambiance, I suggest you go to Barris do Douro, which features incredible river views. I recommend you try the daily menu. It changes every day, and it is super fresh!

This area is quiet and one of the safest neighborhoods in Porto, Portugal. It is super near the city center and its attractions, making it perfect for families with kids!
Boavista is also known as a business district and is more modern than the other zones I am recommending.
Don’t forget to visit Casa da Música during your stay. The architecture is exquisite, and apart from concerts, they feature events for both kids and adults!
Boavista is home to Porto’s longest avenue, Avenida de Boavista, which is 5.5 km (~3.4 mi) long!
Don’t leave the city without discovering everything Serralves Park has to offer. It is home to art museums, including the Serralves Contemporary Art Museum. The park even has a treetop walk, which will charm the whole family!
If you love visiting local markets, Mercado Bom Sucesso in Boavista will deliver for you! This upscale indoor market is filled with nice street food shops and local fresh produce! Avenue Boavista nestles hundreds of restaurants and high-end shops if you want something different!

This picturesque area is located only a 15-minute car drive and a 30-minute public transport ride to Porto’s main attractions, but to be honest, you will be spoiled with activities in Foz do Douro.
The area used to be popular back in the day amongst wealthy people and fishermen. Nowadays, you can find beautiful mansions, top-class restaurants, beautiful beaches, vast ocean views, and boutique stores.
Some of the most outstanding beaches in the area are Praia da Luz, and Praia do Carneiro. If you are near the latest, check out the Fortaleza de São João da Foz, a 17th-century fortress you can visit for free.
Right behind the São João da Foz fortress you can find the lovely Jardim do Passeio Alegre. A great place for a picturesque walk, and if you feel like it you can also have a session at the Clube de Minigolfe do Porto (map), a mini golf course!
By the way, don’t forget to snap an instagrammable photo of Farolim de Felgueiras, a cute granite lighthouse from the 19th century!
If you are a foodie, you need to visit Cafeína, a Michelin-star restaurant – a unique place to surprise someone special if you are on a romantic getaway! (Since it is super popular, it is better to reserve a table here).
For something more casual, you can visit Mercado da Foz do Douro, a lovely market with flower stands, fresh produce, and eateries! Afterward, go for a scenic walk at Pérgola da Nevogilde (map), a beautiful esplanade by the ocean. It will feel like a movie!

Matosinhos is a vibrant beach town located roughly a 20 or 40-minute ride away, depending on your means of transport to Porto. It is a great choice for a) those looking for a beach holiday near the city and b) those who have stayed in Porto before and want to spice things up!
This beautiful town nestles the paradise Matosinhos Beach, where you can surf and sunbathe! Don’t forget to check out the eclectic sculpture made out of fishing nets She Changes (map) when you are there!
If you want to experience the local way of life, visit the Mercado Municipal de Matosinhos and buy fresh produce or try out street food!
By the way, here you can visit the beautiful 17th-century fortress Castelo de Queijo (Forte de São Francisco Xavier) for only €0,50 to pay onsite. The fortress comes with a nice restaurant with views.
Another must-see in the area is the Parish Church of Matosinhos, built in the 18th century. The facade and garden, as well as its interior design, will leave you speechless!

Some Porto areas to avoid are Bairro do Aleixo and Bairro do Cerco. These zones are known to be drug trafficking areas. Sometimes, there are altercations with the police or people from the area, which can escalate quickly. So be cautious and avoid them.
🗓️ How many days is enough to see Porto?
If you are looking to see most of the historical landmarks in the city, I suggest you stay at least 3 days. Especially if you want to discover Vila Nova de Gaia properly.

Seems like most of the first timers attractions are in Ribeira plus Vila Nova de Gaia which is also closer to Ribeira than Central Baixa is. As for Porto, we recommend Baixa because it is close to all the museums but also is full on nice restaurants, we also tried to choose only the places that are in the south part of Baixa, so it is close to Ribeira in any way.
