1. Old Town (Stare Mesto) – where to stay in Bratislava for the first time
Bratislava’s Old Town (Stare Mesto in Slovak) is the historic center of the city. This medieval town was mentioned in writing as early as 907 and has kept its old charm until today.
If you want to be near most attractions, enjoy stunning Danube River views, and get to know the essence of Slovakia’s capital, make Old Town your base. It’s the most popular area for tourists!
The Old Town of Bratislava is divided into multiple parts, with the Western part hosting the iconic Bratislava Castle (map) perched on a hill. This is a signature spot in Bratislava, with views reaching all the way to Austria on a clear day.
I remember the area around the castle was pretty hilly at one point, so if you’re visiting during the summer heat, have a bottle of water + a hat on you. I’ll never forget the sight of students and young adults chilling at the walls of the castle, eating snacks, and enjoying the sights of Danube on a breezy summer evening. Apparently, it’s a common hangaround spot for Slovak youth!
Walk East of the castle, and you’ll reach the main historical center where the town hall and the main cathedral are located. Start your visit from Michael’s Gate (map) and explore the charming cobblestone streets, cute souvenir shops, cafés, and interesting monuments of the historical heart of Bratislava.
I loved the cool pubs in the area, notably on Obchodna Street (map). Check out the iconic Slovak Pub (map) to try Slovak dishes and great beer!
During my trip to Bratislava, I stayed in a boat hotel (botel) on the Danube river, but that one unfortunately seems closed now. Anyway, there’s a line of other botels overlooking Bratislava Castle. I loved the surreal sunset views from there!
But, I’d rather not recommend botels for sleeping but rather just come here to have dinner during the sunset. Nothing can replace a good, sturdy bed that doesn’t move during the night or anytime there are winds or waves on the river!
NOTE: Boat rides on the Danube River usually run from April to October when the weather is nice. They depart from the Danube bank passenger port (map) and take around 45-50 minutes for a round trip, offering stunning views of Bratislava for just €13. Buy tickets online or at the port.

2. Palisady – where to stay in Bratislava with family
Palisady is a quiet and upscale neighborhood just behind the Bratislava Castle, and it’s a top choice if you’re visiting Bratislava with a family. It’s an 8-minute walk from the Castle to its central streets.
This district is a stone’s throw from the Old Town’s vibrant nightlife but without the noise. Plus, it’s really walkable. Here you’ll find the beautiful Horsky park (map) with walkways in the oak forest, and the Slavin monument (map) where thousands of Soviet Army soldiers fallen in WWII are buried). The best part is that entrance to both of them free.
The area around the Slavin monument is so huge I loved walking here and reflecting about the past. Honestly, I can’t even tell the border between the Old Town and Palisady apart from one large street. Everything is super walkable.
I also recommend this area for couples and really anyone who wants to stay close to the attractions but enjoy a bit of privacy. You’ll still find charming cafés, shops, and hangaround spots along the main streets.
GETTING AROUND: We only relied on public transport (and a taxi once) during our stay in Bratislava and absolutely loved it. We most often used buses, but there are also trams and trolleys that’ll get you to any point in the city. You don’t need a car for Bratislava since everything is nearby for tourists. Plus, it’s hard to find parking and the traffic jams are hectic.
SAFETY: Bratislava is a very safe city! Apart from occasional petty crime (mostly pickpocketing) in crowded areas, you have nothing to worry about!

3. Ružinov – best place to stay in Bratislava like a local
Want to immerse in local life, shop in local markets, and possibly save on accommodation? Then Ružinov is the perfect place to lay your head in Bratislava! This large neighborhood starts some 800 meters (2600 feet) East of Old Town and stretches 8 km (5 miles) Northeast until the International Airport of Bratislava.
The city’s largest shopping malls like Nivy Centrum (map) and AVION (map) and markets like Miletičova (map) are located here, so you’ll be mingling with locals looking for the best deals all day long. Basically, the liveliest parts in Ružinov are around the Nivy shopping district and the Miletičova market.
There are also tons of green spaces and opportunities for outdoor activities around the Zlatie Pesky camping site and lake (map). The Zlatie Pesky is an ideal spot to base yourself with an RV!
This is also a business district, so you’ll find many premium and business hotels. I attended a conference in this area and I saw a lot of corporate buildings around as well.
Also, I remember insane traffic somewhere in this area on our way to the airport. If your flight is in the early morning or evening hours, better depart for the airport earlier or choose a hotel near the airport. NH Gate One is just next to the airport and has awesome reviews!
DAY TRIP IDEAS: I actually came to Bratislava on a boat ride from Vienna, Austria (on the Danube River). Vienna is an hour’s ride away and makes a great day trip destination! Budapest (2-hour drive) and Prague (3-hour drive) are also great spots you can see on day trips from Bratislava or where you can continue your Central European journey. There are excellent (fast and cheap) bus connections to all 3 cities so you won’t need to rent a car.
One of the best Ružinov hotels is a bit further from the Old Town but really close to the airport. They have a lovely spa with an indoor pool, spacious rooms with simple décor, and an excellent variety of breakfast to prepare yourself for a day of sightseeing.

4. Nove Mesto – where to stay in Bratislava for active vacation seekers
Nove Mesto is an area located some 3 km (2 miles) away from the Old Town. This district boasts huge green areas, the main train station, and lakes, making it a perfect spot for nature and adventure seekers.
There are so many places to spend time in nature here, starting from the Partisan Meadow (map), the Bratislava Bobsleigh in the forest (map), to hiking areas and stunning sunset views (map).
You have a good bus and rail connection to the Old Town from Nove Mesto, so you’re always less than 40 minutes away from the center of the action. Also, since the main train station is located here (map), you can easily catch trains to nearby cities to continue your journey.
NOTE: The less touristy an area of Bratislava is, the higher the chances are that people won’t speak English as much in it. Keep this in mind if you’re planning a longer stay.
Although there are no luxury hotels in this area, DoubleTree By Hilton and Lindner Hotel Bratislava come close!

5. Petržalka – where to stay in Bratislava for the communist architecture
Petržalka is the only neighborhood in this guide located on the right bank of the Danube. A ride from the center of the area to the Old Town takes around 10 minutes (or 20 minutes on bus line 83). If you’re into Soviet architecture and unique places to stay, choose this area.
FUN FACT: Petržalka is the most densely populated borough in all of Central Europe! It spreads over 2,000 hectares and is home to over 120,000 people.
This is a typical Soviet borough with panel buildings (called panelak in Slovak). It was built during the Cold War and is definitely a unique sight for foreigners.
Due to its tumultuous history (annexed by Nazi Germany, overtook by the Soviets, added to Czechoslovakia and ultimately declared part of Bratislava), you’ll find various groups of people living here. The Slovaks are the majority, but you’ll also find Hungarians and even Germans.
I know many American and Western travelers have a thing for socialist architecture. Personally, I never understood this being a resident of an ex-socialist republic and growing up in communist-built neighborhoods, but who am I to judge? 😉 You can walk around this colorful district and enjoy all the unusual sights and buildings all you want!
If you’re visiting from afar and have never seen communist architecture, then this is definitely a great introduction.
Do note that staying here has its downsides. You’ll have to rely on public transport to get to the city center, there are fewer attractions and restaurants, and the views of Danube are a bit less scenic from this side. I wouldn’t stay here as a first-timer but would definitely visit and walk around.
There are no luxury hotels in this area.

Bratislava is a family-friendly city overall, but the most convenient area for families could be Palisady due to plenty of green spaces and vicinity to the city center. The center will also work for families!
🚶♀️ Is Bratislava a walkable city?
Yes, yes, yes! Bratislava is one of the most walkable cities I’ve been to. Some of Bratislava can get hilly, but this still doesn’t change the fact that you can easily walk from point A to point B in the Old Town and beyond.
💶 Are things cheap in Bratislava?
It depends on what you’re comparing it with. In recent years, Bratislava has become more expensive, and there’s not that big of a difference in pricing compared to Western European countries anymore.
