1. Positano – where to stay for the first time

View of the city of Positano, located on the Amalfi coast in Italy

Positano is one of the MOST popular towns to stay in if you want a luxurious, VIP-level vacation that includes lots of relaxation on the sandy beach during the day and dancing at night!

This cliffside town has a superb soft beach, beautiful architecture, countless pubs and clubs, numerous world-class restaurants, and, of course, plenty of fantastic hotels!

No one does class like Positano when it comes to accommodations. That’s why we have an entire post dedicated to the best luxury hotels there!

This is why you can expect the prices in Positano to be higher than in the other cities along the coast!

NOTE: Positano is known as the “vertical town.” This means it’s pretty hard to get around if you’re traveling with a baby stroller, so bear that in mind when picking your location!

PRO TIP: I recommend renting a car during your stay on the Amalfi Coast so you can take day trips to all the coastal towns and enjoy those breathtaking views on the road!

2. Sorrento – best area to stay for sightseeing

A woman is standing on a balcony overlooking the ocean at sunset in a hotel in Sorrento, Amalfi Coast, Italy

Sorrento is technically not on the Amalfi Coast – it is on the Sorrentinian coast, but it is nevertheless one of the most popular places among tourists as it is a stone’s throw away!

Just have a look through our post with the best places to stay in Sorrento!

Sorrento is amazing because it’s perched on cliffs above the sea, offering stunning views of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. Plus, it’s super charming with its lemon groves, quaint shops, and easy access to famous spots like Capri, Pompeii, and the rest of the gorgeous Amalfi Coast.

PRO TIP: taxis in Sorrento are outrageously expensive (we were asked €60 for a 6-minute ride!!), and the drivers were quite rude and unwilling to negotiate. So, to help you avoid that, here’s a private company (website) that charges half the price.

3. Amalfi – best place to stay on the coast without a car

The beach on the Amalfi coast in Italy with many umbrellas, lounge chairs, and people

Amalfi town is a charming Italian coastal resort between Sorrento and Salerno and one of the most popular choices.

This town is perfect for those of you who don’t want to rent a car as it has lots of public transport connections and buses (website) going to other places on the coast.

Amalfi Town has a bit of everything (at a much more affordable price)! Fab beaches where you can relax, historic attractions, plus a gorgeous Piazza del Duomo where you can grab a cup of coffee or eat!

Amalfi is a great spot for tourists because it’s not just breathtakingly beautiful with its dramatic cliffs and sparkling sea, but it’s also rich in history, home to the stunning 9th-century Amalfi Cathedral.

It is also a great starting point for boat trips (map to the ferry) to nearby Positano, Ravello, and the famous Grotta dello Smeraldo, and the town itself is full of charming streets with shops and cafes to explore.

If you’re looking for some restaurants in town, we’ve got a whole list in our post with the best restaurants on the Amalfi Coast

Now let’s find the best hotels in town! You’ll only find a few options here, but we’ve got a whole post with numerous hotels on the coast, including in Amalfi town!

Distant view of the city of Praiano on the coast of Amalfi, Italy.

You’ll fall in love with this small and charming town with amazing views! Praiano is pretty close to Positano (less than 20 minutes away by car) and Amalfi (around 25 minutes).

Praiano is calmer than its crowded sister towns, making it perfect for people who are not big fans of super touristic places.

It also gives one a chance to get a taste of the “real Amalfi Coast” that hasn’t changed as much (like the other spots) from all the tourism.

If you like being out in nature, then you definitely need to go on the Path of the Gods hike (see trail map)! It’s super famous, and the sights are breathtaking! Just remember to pack some hiking shoes and a hat!

Ravello sits proudly on a cliff, with plenty of hotels overlooking the deep blue sea and lush Italian gardens that will make you feel as if you’ve landed in a movie.

While here, you can take long sunset walks around the coastline, enjoy some romantic dinners (Giuliana’s View is a great spot), and visit attractions like the gorgeous Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone!

6. Maiori and Minori – best towns for families

An aerial view of a beach and ocean in the towns of Maiori and Minor on the Amalfi Coast, Italy

Maiori and Minori are 2 different towns located super close to each other, around 2 km (1 mile) away, and the perfect option if you’re looking for some Amalfi Coast vacation packages for your family!

Why am I saying this?

Because as opposed to the vibrant, crazy Positano, Maiori and Minori are more laid-back, crowd-free, and family-friendly while also having the soft beach super close by.

Maiori is actually the town with the biggest strip of beach on the entire Amalfi Coast and THE place to be for pasta lovers!

This means you can spend your whole holiday playing with the little ones on the beach and having a blast!

How awesome is that? Both of them are also a bit more affordable than other Amalfi Coast towns out there, such as Positano or Amalfi.

7. Salerno – where to stay on the Amalfi Coast on a budget

View of the city of Salerno on the Amalfi coast in Italy.

Some may say that Salerno is not part of the Amalfi Coast, as it’s right at the end of the coastline, but it still counts as one of the best choices if you’re looking for affordable hotels!

Plus, it has the perfect mix of a charming, old Italian town and modern things, including plenty of restaurants where you can enjoy the delicious Italian cuisine.

Another great thing about this town is that it’s a great base if you want easy access to the rest of Italy, such as Rome, which is 2 hours away, or Pompeii (40 minutes) by train.

Sharing the same vibrant atmosphere as its sister towns, Salerno has some fun attractions like the Diocesan Museum of San Matteo and lots of chapels and churches!

PRO TIP: if you are looking for more affordable options, check out Vietri Sul Mare, which is a 20-minute bus ride to Salerno and, for some reason, it is not so known by tourists. Don’t worry – like all the towns on the coast, it is super charming too!

8. Furore – best area to stay for a calm getaway

A bridge over a canal near a cliff in the city of Furore on the Amalfi Coast in Italy

Hands down one of the most underrated towns on the Amalfi Coast and an incredible fishing village! Furore is a small town located between Positano and Amalfi, right at the base of a cliff, and it’s so gorgeous!

Furore is known as the “town that doesn’t exist” because of its hidden location. It’s famous for its fjord, a stunning gorge that leads to a pebble beach and the turquoise sea, making it a paradise for nature lovers and photographers!

Its cute vacation houses, the beautiful murals, and the olive trees scattered everywhere will make you feel like you’ve time-traveled to a much simpler time period!

And if you’re looking for a spot to catch a scenic sunset, check out Passeggiata dell’amore (map), an observation deck that will make you feel like you’ve reached heaven!
