Why buy in advance?
Simply put, to have a chance to actually visit the Crown! As you’ll see me mention many times throughout the post, these tickets sell out months in advance!
In addition, the official website is the only place from where you can buy the tickets, and there’s no second option in case they sell out completely. So, if you really want to go, booking your tickets a few months in advance is a MUST!
1. Tickets for the Statue of Liberty Crown
The Crown of the Statue of Liberty is the highest point of this marvelous UNESCO World Heritage Site! Although it’s pretty hard to reach (a 393 stairs climb, to be exact), many see it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity where you’ll get to admire some incredible views of New York City, Hudson River, and Ellis Island!
If you’re thinking of getting your tickets, then know that you can only get them from the official website. I highly recommend buying them 4 to 5 months in advance as they sell out super fast, especially during peak season, which is from June to August.
The tickets for the Crown cost US$24.80 for adults and US$12.30 for kids, and they include:
- Access to the Crown and Pedestal
- The ferry service to and from the landmark
- An audio tour of the grounds
- Access to both the Ellis Island Museum and the Statue of Liberty Museum.
NOTE: The staff recommends people who have respiratory problems, heart conditions, claustrophobia, or other physical or mental conditions, to avoid visiting the Crown as the climb can be difficult.
Once you buy your tickets, you’ll get an email with a confirmation number, which you’ll show at the Clinton Castle ticket office in Battery Park on the day of your visit, along with your ID document and the credit card used to buy the ticket.
Then you’ll get on a ferry to Liberty Island where you’ll explore around, but I’d recommend going first to visit the Crown and the Pedestal, as the last entrance is at 3:30 PM and to get inside you’ll have to queue in for another security line which can take a while.
After you pass the security line, you’ll go up the stairs. Bear in mind that once you get up right at the top, you won’t get to hang there for too long. You’ll probably have time to look a bit, take some pics, and then you’ll have to start your climb down the stairs.

2. Important things to know about Statue of Liberty Crown Tickets
- You can buy max 4 tickets from the website
- There are 4 time-slots at 9 AM, 10 AM, 11 AM, and 1 PM (these times are for the entrance to the screening facility prior to boarding the ferry not for entering the Crown)
- The last entrances to see the Crown are 3:30 PM (Jan 1 to May 27), 4:30 PM (May 28 – Sep 5), 4 PM (Sep 6 to Oct 10), 3:30 PM (Oct 11 to 31 Dec)
- You can’t buy tickets on-site, only online in advance or by calling 877-523-9849
- You must pick up your Crown tickets at the ticket office Will Call window, either at the New Jersey or New York ticket office
- The minimum height requirement for children visiting the Crown level is 42 inches, or 1.1 meters
- Make sure you have with you an ID and the credit card used to buy the tickets
- There are 393 steps to climb up to the crown (there isn’t much space and it can get pretty hot during the summer time)
- There is no elevator from the pedestal to the crown
- It’s recommended you buy your tickets 4 or 5 months in advance as they sell out super fast
- The ferry service to and from the landmark is included in your ticket
- You’re not allowed to bring with you large packages, suitcases, carry-on luggage, or any food and drinks (if you’ve got any you can leave them in the lockers located by the entrance of the Statue of Liberty National Monument)
- Toilets are available in the monument and near the food area, as well as at departure points
3. Other types of Statue of Liberty tickets
Now that you’ve learned all there is to know about the Statue of Liberty Crown tickets, let’s see what other types of tickets you can get if, for example, you’re not interested in climbing up all those (393) stairs!
3.1 General Admission tickets
When buying these tickets, you can choose if you want to leave from New Jersey (Liberty State Park) or from New York (from Battery Park).
This ticket costs US$24.50 for adults and US$12 for kids, and it includes:
- The roundtrip ferry ride to Liberty Island and Ellis Island
- Grounds of the Statue of Liberty National Monument
- Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration
- Audio guide tours of both islands
NOTE: When you pick your time it’s for the entry into the Security Facility, not a specific ferry departure. Ferries depart every 20 – 30 minutes from the New York departure point and every 25 – 35 minutes from the Liberty State Park in NJ. You can check the exact ferry departure times here.
You can buy the cheapest tickets from the official website, and if for some reason you can’t make it on the day, you can cancel at least 24h before your visit and get your money back.
These tickets will also sell out pretty fast, but in that case, you can also buy them on GetYourGuide (US$30.50) and Tiquets (US$30). Both of these resellers offer the opportunity to get a full refund if you cancel at least 24h before your visit.

3.2 Pedestal Reserve tickets
Just like the General Admission, this ticket also offers the chance to embark on the ferry from New Jersey (Liberty State Park) or from New York (from Battery Park).
This ticket costs US$24.80 for adults and US$12.30 for kids, and it includes:
- The roundtrip ferry ride to Liberty Island and Ellis Island
- Access to the Fort Wood section of the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty National Monument
- Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration
- Audio Guide Tours of both islands
NOTE: The time slot you pick is for the entry into the Security Facility, not a specific ferry departure. Ferries depart every 25 – 30 minutes from the New York departure point and every 25 – 35 minutes from the Liberty State Park in New Jersey. You can check the exact ferry departure times here.
You can get these tickets only from the official website, and just like the previous ones, you can cancel them at least 24h before your visit and get your money back.

- Luxury Yacht Tour – Jump on this fabulous yacht from the 1920s and admire the beautiful Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Battery Park, and Governor’s Island from afar. The tour will last around 1h and 30 min, and it costs US$65 per person.
- Family Private Tour – Take your little ones on a fun, family-oriented private tour of the Statue of Liberty that takes around 2h, and costs US$520 per group of up to 4 people. The tour includes your round-trip ferry tickets, access to Liberty Island, and access to the museum on Ellis Island.

There are so many things to consider when planning your trip to New York City, starting from which hotels to pick to what attractions to see. So, I thought I’d note down all the details that you need to know before visiting this famous attraction in particular!
How to get to the Statue of Liberty
In order to get to the Statue of Liberty, you’ll have to get on a ferry from Manhattan’s Battery Park. Let’s see how you can get to the park first:
- You can take the Bowling Green tube, which runs in a straight line on the east side, starting from the northernmost point of Manhattan all the way down to Battery Park. The nearest tube station to Battery Park is only a 5 min walk away from the departing ferry point.
- The nearest bus station is Battery Pl/Washington St, which is served by buses M20 and SIM2.
Ferry schedule & opening hours
When buying your tickets for the Statue of Liberty, no matter which tickets you buy (Crown, Pedestal, or General Entry), you’ll have to pick a time slot. As I mentioned, these time slots are the time you get in line to enter the screening facility.
- For the crown tickets: there are 4 time-slots at 9 AM, 10 AM, 11 AM, and 1 PM
- For the pedestal tickets:the time slots are every hour, starting from 9 AM until 2 PM
- For the general entry: the time slots are every hour, starting from 9 AM until 3 PM
No matter the tickets you buy it’s recommended to arrive at least 30 min earlier, as you’ll probably wait in a queue for the screening facility
After that, you’ll get to go on the ferry, which usually leaves every 20 minutes, starting from 9 AM until 3:30 PM, and you can see the schedule for the day of your visit on their official page.
What to bring (or not bring)
With so many things on your mind, it’s easy to forget what you have to bring with you (or not). That’s why I made this short list of the most important things you need to check when visiting the Statue of Liberty

Security check
Before you board on the ferry you’ll have to go through an airport-style security screening. The whole process takes around 5 – 10 min although it can take longer if the lines are super long.
Just like in the airport, you’ll have to place all items containing metal into purses, jackets, and backpacks and then go through the screening.
