1. Padang Padang – where to stay in Uluwatu for first-timers
Padang Padang is probably the most popular spot in Uluwatu! Situated on the peninsula’s Western coast, this area is known for its lively atmosphere, gorgeous beach, and incredible waves – perfect for surfing.
The ultimate attraction in the area is Padang Padang Beach (map) – sandy shoreline, turquoise waters, and large and unique boulders are just some of its defining features. However, surfing is the No.1 activity here, attracting beginners and experienced surfers alike!
TIP: If you’re a surfer, you may want to check out Rip Curl Cup, a surfing competition that takes place right here on Padang Padang Beach.
But trust me, Padang Padang Beach is so much more than a good surfing spot! The exotic landscape will make you fall in love with this beach and want to return as soon as possible to chill on the soft sand and admire the unique rock formations.
FUN FACT: Padang Padang Beach was actually the place where Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem filmed one of the scenes for the famous movie Eat, Pray Love! It was actually the place where they met, but if you’re looking for the beach bar from the movie, you won’t find it – they made a set just for the movie.
Another beach that’s easily accessible from Padang Padang is Labuan Sait Beach (map), a popular sandy beach where you can swim, surf, and even see wild monkeys! But keep in mind that this beach (as well as Padang Padang Beach) can get super crowded, so I suggest you get there early to find a spot.
Seeing as this is a popular Uluwatu area, there are quite a few cafes and cool restaurants around, but if you’re looking to discover more of the island, it’s a good idea to rent a scooter. Also, scooters are the best way to get around the island, so I suggest you book one for the entire duration of your stay.
NOTE: Padang Padang, along with the rest of the Western side of the Bukit peninsula, is part of the Pecatu village. This part of the peninsula is recognizable for its hilly landscapes and beautiful beaches that are excellent for surfing. few spots where you can rent your surfboard and of course lots of places to grab a drink or something to eat.
Wake up to a breathtaking view of the Indian Ocean at this resort that offers villas with a pool! Suarga Padang Padang is set atop a cliff between the palm trees, which makes every sunset look so special! I hope you’re ready to get pampered at the spa and take some yoga lessons because they’ve got plenty of that here!

2. Suluban and Uluwatu Beach – near Uluwatu Temple
When people first mention Uluwatu, one of the first associations is the Uluwatu Temple. So, if this is the top thing you want to see on your trip, then you should stay in the area of Suluban, around Uluwatu Beach. Located just a 7-min drive Southwest of Padang Padang, this charming area is great for a quintessential Bali experience.
As I already mentioned, the main perk of staying here is the fact that you’ll have easy access to the Uluwatu Temple (map). This ancient Hindu temple is perched on a cliff and offers the most stunning views of the ocean. But this area is more famous for the traditional Kecak dance.
The Kecak dance is a traditional Balinese dance that features chanting and fire dancing, as well as unique costumes. I highly recommend you go see the dance while in Uluwatu, but you should know that it’s extremely popular, and the amphitheater gets super crowded.
PRO TIP: The Kecak dance takes place twice a day – once at 5.45 P.M. and once at 7.00 P.M. – but the amphitheater is usually already full at least 45 mins before the first show. So, even if you have the ticket but there’s no room, you might miss the show. So, I suggest booking your ticket online and getting your ticket from the special (shorter) line.
While you’re in the area, hike up to the Karang Boma Cliff (map) and stay to watch the sunset over the ocean.
Of course, you also have to spend some time on the beach – both Suluban Beach (map) and Uluwatu Beach (map) are great places to try surfing or just bask under the sun. Another cool beach to check out is Blue Point Beach (map), a white sand beach where you can see a beautiful sunset.
NOTE: Uluwatu is recognizable for its cliffs, and most of the beaches are situated below the cliffs. That means that if you want to go to the beach, you’ll have to access it from above – either via a staircase or a walking path. Even though it’s not the most convenient way of getting to the beach, the end result is definitely worth it.
The Suluban area is teeming with restaurants and cafes, so you can take your pick, but I’d suggest Single Fin Bali (map). This restaurant has an incredible cliffside terrace and serves delicious smoothie bowls – the ideal breakfast spot!
Just a few steps away from the beach and a 5-min drive from the Uluwatu Temple, this 4-star resort boasts an outdoor pool and spa center, as well as an on-site restaurant serving tasty vegan and vegetarian meals. The rooms are spacious and feature Balinese decor, plus a private balcony.

3. Bingin Beach – best area to stay in Uluwatu for surfing
Welcome to one of the most amazing beaches in Uluwatu! Located in Pecatu Village and a 7-min drive North of Padang Padang, Bingin Beach is famous for its untamed waves, which all surfers love. The area has a more laid-back atmosphere than other Uluwatu areas, which is why I chose it for both of my trips to Uluwatu.
If you’re an avid surfer, I’m sure you’ll spend most of your time riding the waves at Bingin Beach (map). And even if you’re not a surfer, you’ll definitely enjoy the beach – the landscapes are absolutely stunning.
Besides the beach, the area abounds with restaurants perched on the cliffside, where you can enjoy a delicious meal with a stunning view. During my visit, I went to Abracadabra (map), and I highly recommend it. The views were mesmerizing!
Another thing you should definitely do while staying in Bingin Beach is drive out to visit the popular Dreamland Beach (map). The beach is lined with cool cafes, beach clubs, and restaurants, so it’s a great spot to spend the day. And don’t forget to check out El Kabron (map) and sample some of the Spanish dishes on offer!
NOTE: You have to pay a small fee to enter most Uluwatu beaches. Don’t let this catch you by surprise, and always have some cash in local currency on you.
There are plenty of cliffside resorts in Bingin Beach, so if you want to wake up to an amazing view, be sure to book your Uluwatu hotel here. You’ll find my recommendations down below, and you can read about my personal experience with staying in Bingin Beach.
This is where I stayed on my first trip to Uluwatu and I absolutely loved it! The hotel has an amazing infinity pool overlooking the ocean where you can see the stunning sunset – just don’t be surprised if any monkeys come to say hi while you’re taking a swim. And let’s not forget there’s a private elevator to the beach.
Other accommodation options in Bingin Beach
The adults-only hotel features Balinese-style decor and offers a swimming pool, spacious suites, and spa services
Stay at these affordable bungalows that have everything you need, including a pool, a garden, and a terrace
Enjoy your stay in Uluwatu at this modern villa that offers breakfast, a private pool, and free parking
The Korowai – on my second trip to Uluwatu, I stayed at the Korowai, and even though the Anantara is still my favorite, I had a great time here, too. The last stretch of the road to the hotel has to be crossed on foot – it’s a bit difficult – but the staff will come and help you with the luggage. However, the view from your room and the food at the restaurant will make you forget all about it!
Things to do in Bingin Beach
- Relax on Bingin Beach
- Sign up for a surfing lesson and learn to ride the waves
- Enjoy a meal with a view at Abracadabra
- Spend the day sipping on cold coconuts at Dreamland Beach
- Try Spanish cuisine at El Kabron
- Attend the ‘Thirsty Thursdays’ at The Cashew Tree (map)
4. Ungasan & Melasti Beach – best place to stay in Uluwatu for relaxation
If you’re looking for a place where you can relax, unwind, and maybe escape some of the crowds, Ungasan and Melasti Beach are the right choices for you. This part of Uluwatu is situated on the peninsula’s Southern shore, a 25-min drive away from Padang Padang, and has a very chill vibe.
This remote area is packed with scenic spots, beautiful beaches and lots of other places to discover. Melasti Beach (map) is by far the most popular spot in Ungasan, boasting sparkling white sand and surrounded by huge limestone cliffs.
Green Bowl Beach (map) is a smaller and more secluded beach with fewer crowds and a more laid-back atmosphere. However, if you’re looking for something more upbeat, then I’ll direct you to the Sundays Beach Club (map), where you can enjoy both stunning nature and luxurious amenities.
While staying here, you absolutely have to visit the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Statue (map), the largest statue in all of Indonesia. After seeing the statue, stick around and explore more of the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park (map) – you might even see a concert or a dance performance.
As I already mentioned, this area is a bit more remote and relaxed, so it’s a great choice for couples planning a romantic getaway, as well as for families with kids looking to avoid the hustle and bustle.
Now let’s check out the top hotels in Ungasan:
This cliff-edge resort is set above the Indian Ocean (yep the views are just as fabulous as you can imagine) and it offers a private beach area and an infinity pool. Get in the Bali mood with a long spa sesh and some yummy cocktails by the pool, or maybe with a quick tennis game! Your choice!

5. Balangan – where to stay in Uluwatu for the best views
There’s no better spot to catch a sunset than Balangan Beach! This is one of the best places to stay in Uluwatu for anyone who wants to top up their Instagram game and admire Uluwatu’s beauty! Just half an hour’s drive North of Padang Padang, this serene area hosts some of the most breathtaking landscapes in Bali.
Balangan Beach (map) will definitely make you want to move to Bali forever! I’m sure many people have thought that at least once after chilling on the sand or exploring the rocky formations. Whether you want to relax, ride the waves or simply walk around the beach, Balangan Beach is perfect for any of those activities.
There’s also the small Balangan Temple (map), which I definitely recommend you check out. And, of course, the usual bars and restaurants, where you can enjoy some drinks after a day of sunbathing and swimming.
Balangan doesn’t have as many attractions or popular beaches as the other areas featured in this post. However, it’s definitely a great choice for nature lovers and solo travelers who want to avoid the crowds but still be centrally located to reach all Uluwatu’s attractions.
Start your day with a swim in your private plunge pool at this resort, which offers spacious villas with a unique Balinese decor. The accommodation offers a complimentary breakfast in the morning, yoga classes, and a spa center where you can unwind after a day of surfing and exploring Uluwatu, Bali.
