If you’re a wine lover, you certainly like going to wine tastings and strolling around vineyards. The experience is super fun, but you may have trouble deciding what to wear to a winery.

That’s okay – a lot of people struggle with this! I certainly did. So, I decided to create the ultimate list of winery attire so you’ll be ready for your next wine tour/tasting.

I love wine, so I’ve visited a couple of wineries and picked up a few things about what to wear at a winery. Based on my experience and some extra research, I created a list of 6 universal items needed to create the perfect outfit for your trip to the winery.

I also provide a quick list of DOs and DONTs when visiting a winery – by the end of this post, you’ll know everything you need. You’ll also get some wine-tasting outfit ideas! Plus I included some outfit inspiration for each season.

I’m pretty sure you can create at least a couple of winery outfits with what’s in your wardrobe. If not, it might be a good time to do some shopping. For each item listed in the article, I provide a couple of recommendations so you have an idea of what to shop for!

Let’s get started!

Quick Picks for Your Stay

Take a look at the list with the top 6 items to wear to a winery:

  • Comfy shoes
  • Neutral-colored clothes
  • Warm coat/jacket
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Cross-body bag

Basic Rules to Follow When Going to a Winery

Before we start talking about specific clothing items, there are a few universal things you should know about the winery dress code:

  • No perfume – you’ll want to feel all of the aromas of the wine you’re tasting, and the perfume (or cologne) could affect your sense of smell.
  • No white or light-colored clothes – don’t wear clothes in very light colors to avoid dealing with potential stains.
  • Don’t wear heels – during your tour, you’ll be walking a lot, sometimes on uneven terrain, and you’ll get tired very quickly in heels.
  • No handheld purses – it’s a good idea to keep your hands free to have a glass in hand, so don’t bring a clutch or any handheld purse.
  • Avoid uncomfortable clothes – tight clothes and synthetic fabrics are a bad idea, as you’ll spend quite some time in the winery.
  • Dress for the season – choose your outfit according to the time of year; summer calls for lighter clothing, and winter definitely requires layers.
  • Don’t overdress (or underdress) – no sweatshirts or leggings but no ball gowns, either.
  • Always wear sunscreen – you’ll likely spend some time outside, so sunscreen is a must.
  • Opt for smudge-free lipstick – it’s bad etiquette to leave lipstick stains on wine glasses, so go smudge-free or leave out the lipstick.

What to Wear to a Winery: 6 Essential Pieces

The list below contains the 6 must-have clothing items for your winery visit. Of course, for each item, you can choose something that reflects your personal style – these are simply the general guidelines.

1. Comfortable shoes

You’ll be on your feet most of the day during your winery tour, so comfy shoes should be your top priority. As I already said – no heels! So, you’ll need to wear flat shoes that fit you well (probably not sneakers, though).

Women have a lot more choice when it comes to footwear! You can go for classic ankle-strap flats in spring and fall, pick out sandals for summer, and boots for winter. The guys can opt for Oxford shoes like these or a nice pair of boots.

2. Clothes in neutral colors

Whether you decide on a winery dress or a shirt and pants combo, pick neutral colors. So, no super-light colors (white, pastel pink, baby blue) and no fluorescent colors, either. Choose darker colors (black, navy blue) and earthy tones (brown, olive green, gray).

For example, I’d choose something like this V-neck blouse combined with simple black pants. But that’s just me! The possibilities are endless and you can pick whatever you like – and don’t forget to adjust for the season!

3. Warm top layer

A top layer is a must when visiting a winery. Even if you’re going in summer, the inside of the winery, especially the cellar, will very likely be chilly. You don’t want to catch a cold, so bring a comfortable, semi-casual jacket.

A blazer is a safe bet and works on many occasions. I have one of these long blazers, and I’ve been combining it with different outfits for years! Men won’t go wrong with a casual blazer – also very versatile.

A denim jacket is another great option for pairing with more casual winery outfits. It works super well in summer; women can combine a denim jacket with a flowy dress, while men can wear a jacket with a short-sleeved, button-down shirt.

4. Hat

The hat is a staple of all wine-tasting outfits! You’ll be spending time outdoors, and a wide-brim hat is a great way to protect your face from the sun. Besides the practical benefits, the hat will add a bit of flair to your outfit.

The unisex fedora is the ultimate choice for both men and women, and it works great for both spring and summer. But if you’re visiting a winery in the cold season (fall and winter) and need to keep your head warm, a cool beanie is the way to go.

5. Sunglasses

Two women in sun hats and sunglasses walk through a vineyard, each holding a wine glass and smiling at each other.

My go-to outfit advice is: don’t go anywhere without sunglasses! You never know when the sun will start shining, even in winter, so it’s best to be prepared. Slip your pair of sunglasses in your bag and pop them on when you tour the winery’s outdoor grounds.

If you don’t have a pair of trusted sunglasses, I’d recommend getting these polarized sunglasses. They look great on both women and men and are available in a variety of colors.

6. Cross-body bag

The final item you need to secure before your winery outing is a bag. I already told you that you need free hands, so you need to look for a cross-body bag. Luckily, these bags come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and styles, so you can choose one to match your outfit.

When I pick out cross-body bags, I want them to be both practical and fashionable. I have a model similar to this, and I’m very happy with it – it fits all the essentials and looks super cute. That was my recommendation for the ladies, but if guys need a bag, too, this ALDO bag is an excellent choice.

Springtime provides many opportunities to experiment with different styles, and your visit to the winery is no exception. I’d recommend combining dark jeans with a dress shirt and a blazer and adding a hat to top it all off:

I love the autumnal wardrobe – it pairs really well with the winery aesthetic. For example, wear dark-colored pants, a knit sweater, and a knee-length coat, combining them with boots and a cross-body bag.

What to wear for wine-tasting in winter

A collage of winter winery outfit items: black turtleneck, black pants, black blazer, brown boots, brown bag, and a black beanie.

Visiting a winery in winter doesn’t mean you can’t express your sense of fashion. I suggest combining a comfy turtleneck with a blazer, black pants, and warm boots. Top it all off with a beanie and a cute bag.
