Colourful and historic, modern and colonial, local and touristic, Cartagena de Indias represents one of the liveliest Colombian beach resorts. Its character mixes cultures and peoples, including natives, Spanish, African and Arab. Its rich legacy granted its Old Town the recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
When the Spanish founded the city in 1533, the region had already been inhabited for thousands of years. It became an important port for the Spanish gold and a significant political centre. Echoes of those times can be seen throughout the historic centre, in the city walls, the San Felipe de Barajas Castle, and the colourful streets and colonial squares. Some of the best hotels in Cartagena de Indias can be found here.

This is a caribic city what I didn't know and I was disappointed. Too hot and smelly and dirty. The vendors are violent. They literally harass tourists. Restaurant prices are randomly higher than on the menu, not an honest attitude. I never want to go to Cartagena again. This is not Colombia, this is the Caribbean.

Ten years ago, we loved the authentic Latino feel. Because it’s now become a stopover for cruise-boaters, it’s very expensive and the vibe isn’t quite there anymore — courtesy of us gringos, of course. La Mulata is still a great place to eat … but like it or not, you should expect to be sitting close to those from your home and native land.

Take an Apartment with a pool in Bocogrande to have a beautiful view and the sea nearby, as well as silence at night for an adequate price. Walk through all the streets of the old town - just prepare your own route so you don’t have to go with a guide and a crowd of tourists. Drop in at the restaurants and try ceviche. In the evening, visit the rooftop bar. Be sure to take a boat tour to the islands. Feed the monkeys in the central park. Walk along the beaches of Bocogrande. Three full days were enough for us.

Cartagena do Indias has various sections to explore: the walled Old Town, the beaches, the communities where people actually live. Each a different flavor. Lots of history and beauty. Hot and sunny with warm people.

Maria and Morgan are incredibly lovely hosts and their little Boutique Hotel is truly one of a kind. We had an incredible stay here in Cartagena. The rooms are lovely, beautifully decorated with great attention to detail and the staff is very attentive to your wishes and needs (try the delicious pancakes for breakfast!). This was one of our best stays we had during our three weeks in Colombia. Thank you for this great time.
This is an impeccable boutique B&B, located right in the centre of the old city. It has beautiful , newly-furnished rooms with every conceivable mod-con and the most comfortable beds ever! The breakfast menu (and the cocktail menu) were both very elaborate. Itnotonly has a small pool(and jacuzzi), but you can also use the pool (and other facilities) of the sister hotel, located a block away.
Beautiful colonial house garden hotel. An oasis from the busy walled old city at the end of the street. Gorgeous big room with terrace and direct access to pool in garden setting. Very accomodating and friendly staff
The hotel was very well situated in the old city. The rooms were big and well serviced. The food was good with a la carte breakfast including local foods. Staff all very friendly and attentive to our needs.
