Home to one of America’s icons – the Golden Gate Bridge – San Francisco is a liberal city where life is very much for the living.
Surrounded by water on 3 sides, the city's spread over steep hills that make for great photo ops. And none better than the zig-zag Lombard Street, seen in many a film. Even more famous are San Fran's iconic trolleys climbing the hills – a little touristy, but still worth a ride.
In the middle of the bay, Alcatraz island is known for the notorious criminals once imprisoned there. Even if you don’t go inside, the views of the bridge and city are unparalleled.
Nowhere is life in San Francisco more laid-back than on the Pacific beaches. Rent a bike and head out there, passing through the huge Golden Gate Park, before returning to sample some fresh seafood at Fisherman’s Wharf. Don't miss the clam chowder served in bread bowls! Chinatown also has a great selection of mid-range restaurants.
As you fly into San Francisco Airport, look out for the exclusive homes lining the Bay Area. Whether you want a more independent stay in apartments, luxury San Francisco hotels or cheap hostels, Booking.com has something for everyone. Be careful though – you might just leave your heart here!
San Francisco isn't a real place with real people.
San Francisco isn't a real place with real people. It is there to run game on the working class and scam people out of their youth. It is the most expensive city on earth. At any given moment residents are outnumbered by tourists and homeless. Don't be a sucker.

All big cities have a downside and that doesn’t exclude SF.
All big cities have a downside and that doesn’t exclude SF. Yes, there are some areas that are exacerbated by homelessness and decline of business. However, that isn’t the whole story. The city still has vibrant neighborhoods, incredible sights, and extraordinary dining options you’d be hard to find elsewhere. Make sure you go beyond the Pier 39 area or Golden Gate Bridge; yes quintessential. Some other great highlights include a day trip to Angel Island, an outing to Crissy Field or Baker Beach or in the presidio area in general, visiting the Lincoln Park neighborhood with the Legion of Honor and surrounding trails and cliff views, Golden Gate Park with the Japanese tea garden, the botanical gardens, and the several museums like de Yound and California Academy of Sciences, the food in the mission neighborhood alone could be a day….the options are endless and that’s just SF. Plenty of surrounding suggestions like Muir Woods, Sausalito, Oakland, Berkeley, Napa and Sonoma, Monterey Bay, Point Reyes, Santa Cruz to name a few.

I only had two nights and one full day. I love walking.
I only had two nights and one full day. I love walking. I walked 30km all around SF. Golden gate. Ocean beach. The city. Everything. Also used public transport to and from airport.
For me it is all about the beauty of the The Bay and the buildings architecture and general scenery.
Only downsides - Chinatown was crap - nothing like the real thing - full of crap tourist gifts - very few restaurants and very few Chinese people. Fisherman’s wharf is a bit overrated too. But it’s ok for a quick walk to get the feel of it all. Only other downside is some of the less safe areas in the downtown area.

Since the homeless were hustled out of the City to make it...
Since the homeless were hustled out of the City to make it look good for the Chinese visitors a while ago, it's not as bad as it was but still not great. However, there are still many car break-ins happening and are warned by the hotels to not leave anything in your car. The DeYoung Museum, The Academy of Sciences, Golden Gate Park, Japantown, China Town, The Momo and the wharfs are all favorite places to visit. Getting around is very slow due to traffic and parking is expensive. When you leave the City, do not attempt it past 2:30PM as traffic is barely creeping. I suggest taking Lift or Uber around the City during your stay, they are everywhere and inexpensive. We always eat in Japantown, restaurants in the Filmore District, and just outside of Golden Gate Park. Enjoy the City as there is a lot to experience.
Room was super clean and the right size for a solo traveller. I had more than enough space including a separate dressing room! The hotel was attentive to my request for a quiet room and while I had no view to speak of, I slept soundly at night! Location was good on Powell Street, not far from downtown, Union Square and Chinatown. It is not the prettiest part of town but it is convenient. It is quite safe in the area after dark - not as bad as some other streets. It is quite close to public transport.
This is the Best Hostel. It is literally in the Center , Downtown San Francisco Union Square area.
There are Supermarkets, Eating places near the Hostel.
I had a room for my self which had all Amenities!
The staff is friendly and always willing to help.
I highly recommend Orang Village Hostel to International Travellers and California Residents don’t bother by chance they took me in as i didn’t know that locals aren’t allowed!
Overall best hostel in San Francisco, California!
Tea/cordial time in the afternoon was great as was coffee in the mornings. The staff was super friendly and helpful. Walking distance to Union Square and many restaurants in the area. The room was spacious (2 bedroom suite) and the decor was wonderful. The older theme fit the hotel and its historic nature. It felt like a bed and breakfast but without the breakfast. All in all it was a wonderful stay and we will definitely stay there again when we go back next year.
The location of the hotel is great! It's right next to Chinatown and Union Square, and a short walk to the BART. The area felt reasonably safe, even at night. It's very clean & quiet, the room/bathroom is nice, and the beds are very comfortable. WiFi is free and good, A/C works well. The staff was very nice and friendly. I was also able to check in early which was really nice. Overall it was a great stay and I'd definitely stay here again!
The location was really excellent. It was right at the heart of San Francisco's downtown area. The hotel was literally just a few steps away from the historic cable car station, the Union Square as well as those well renowned American shopping malls (Macy's, Westfield, Bloomingdales & Target). The room was big enough and was really clean. I don't need airconditioning for I was there during the cold spring season.
I found this place in a travel blog written by SF locals, and I’m so glad I did. As a single female, I felt safe in the area and in the hotel, which was one of my main criteria. The hotel was charming, and the staff incredibly friendly. They offered a complimentary wine and cheese in the evening and then breakfast in a cute lounge with fireplaces. It was east walking distance to explore Union Square and China town.
Small hotel in heart of chinatown. The best part about this hotel is its location, walking distant to Union square, Italian area, Cable car, view of the Coit building, etc. We also lucked out in corner room, which was pretty big and good view ( We paid over $100 a night for this room). You can leave luggage after check out, they are organized about this. They give you proper tickets!
It is very well situated, just a block away from union square and market street. The overall vibe of the place was ok, for looks it would get even higher points. The common areas look well designed. It feels like a boutique hotel for much cheaper price. And that is a big thing in SF where very shitty places can ask you hundreds of dollars for a night.
The hotel is guarded with security guards at the lobby which is safer at night. Reception at 3rd floor with the restaurant and waiting area full with funky and colorful decoration on wall which made it vibrant. Room is clean, comfortable, great view. Location is strategic which is next to union square, BART station and other public transport.
The hotel is very conveniently located in downtown SF, as it close to Union Square and is 100 m away from the Powell Metro station from which the airports (I flew to/from SFO, but this is true also for OAK) can be easily reached. The room was small, but comfortable. There is no breakfast service, but coffè is available in the morning.
Beautifully decorated hotel with comfortable rooms. Stylish bar area which did a good breakfast in the morning. Great location just around the corner from Powell station and right in the heart of the downtown San Francisco which was perfect for our one night stay.
Layne hotel is a very good option to stay in San Francisco. Very good located just 15 minutes walking of the Moscone, and 5 minutes walking to the Union Square, Ryan has an excellent customer service always pending on our requests. I will back definitely.
Cute boutique hotel in the heart of Union Square. Very basic hotel, but it has all the necessities. Staff were friendly, it was comfortable, and fairly priced. Not very spacious, but understandably so since it is a historic building in the heart of downtown.
Is was very clean, the hotel smelled nice. There was a big common area with games and a bar which was very useful since everything closes at 9 in SF.
It is very close to everything. I think this is the best location you can get as a tourist in San Francisco
Great location in downtown, just of Union Square, from which to explore the rest of San Francisco. Conveniently located for easy access to local and wider transport networks. Good gym with a variety of cardio and weight machines.
Nice hotel close to Union Square and Powel st/Market public transit. Clean and nice room with kitchenette. Sofabed not so comfortable, but most of them are not. Nice "Club room" on top floor with seating area and coffee/tea.
We have been coming to Union Square for many years and staying at the Handlery every time. The location is the best! The hotel is nice, clean and the staff are extremely polite!
Close to Union square, parking. Friendly staff and clean. The neighborhood wasn’t the best but definitely nice hotel for the price. I would stay there again!
If you wish to spend more time at the piers a d tourist places this is a great location. Union square has some great hotels but it’s more of a business area.
